• First grade is Fabulous!

    In first grade, students explore many exciting topics throughout the year in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies.

    Reading:  Taking steps towards independent reading through instruction and practice in phonics and word study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  A variety of nonfiction and fiction texts are used in whole group and small group instruction.

    Writing:  Narrative, Opinion, Informative, Fiction and Poetry Units are practiced with instruction in grammar skills such as using capital letters, end punctuation, and writing complete sentences.

    Mathematics:  Counting money, telling time, skip counting, reading number through 110, basic addition and subtraction facts, geometric shapes, and patterns are some of the skills emphasized.

    Science:  Students explore the topics of collecting and examining life, weather, and solids, liquids and gases. Hands on lessons are taught encouraging: wondering, thinking, trying, observing, recording and discovering. 

    Social Studies:  Family, community and culture at home, in school and in the community, geography skills, famous people, and holidays include some of the highlights.

    Technology:  Appropriate behavior for technology use, use the mouse to point and click, log on to the computer, start and stop software programs, common keyboard keys, introduction to word document skills and website navigation.
