  • Trowel and Plow Summer Work Log

Posted by JAMES MASSEY on 6/1/2016 2:30:00 PM

This is were you will log the day, time, and work you completed in the gardens.  You also need to log the produce (including the weight they give you at the food larder) if you take any over to be donated.

    Thanks!

Our garden remodeling is almost complete.  We have transplanted the vegetable plants we started from seed to the beds.  Now it is time to care for the plants during school and over the summer.

We will need students to water the beds while we are in school.

During the summer we will need families to select a week to care for the beds and harvest the vegetables.  Families will need to take the harvested goods over to the New Britain Food Larder, Housed at the New Britain Baptist Church.

We ask that familes blog their work and the amount of food donated to the Food Larder.  When you drop off the vegetables, they will weigh them.  Provide the weight and types of vegetables donated.

    September Update

    Unami Trowel and Plow

We are almost three weeks into the new school year.  The summer vacation is now a memory. For those who struggled to put food on the table for their families, the memory may not have been so fond.  Although we go on vacation, hunger never takes a break.

It is for this reason that I am pleased to share some exciting news.  Students from Unami middle school and their families worked over the summer vacation to reinforce our commitment to food security in our community.  They maintained Unami’s 17 vegetable beds and donated the produce to the New Britain Food Larder and the Doylestown Food Pantry.  Although our records may be incomplete, we were able to donate:

    21 yellow squash,

    7 acorn squash,

    93 cucumbers,

    65 peppers,

    2 lbs. of scallions,

    18 head of red cabbage,

    105 beets (red and golden),

    12 zucchini,

    14 green cabbage,

    10 eggplant,

    54 tomatoes,

5 gal. bags of Dino Kale,

53 lbs of Potatoes, and bunches of Parsley and Thyme.

Thank you to everyone who helped!  We are so proud of our students and their willingness to give of themselves so that their fellow community members can have fresh produce.  We are so grateful for their families and our colleagues that have supported this program.  This is truly a caring community!
