Middle School - Grades 6-8
The Central Bucks School District middle school science program engages students in active, inquiry‑based learning experiences that emphasize sense‑making and problem solving. Students regularly ask questions, develop and use models, plan and carry out investigations, analyze data, and construct evidence‑based explanations as they deepen their understanding of the natural world.
Science in grades 6–8 is taught using an integrated instructional model aligned to the Pennsylvania STEELS Standards. Each year, students explore concepts from earth and space science, life science, physical science, and engineering, allowing them to see connections across scientific disciplines and apply their learning in meaningful contexts.
All middle school science units:
- Are grounded in real‑world phenomena or problems
- Use instructionally embedded assessments to inform teaching and learning
- Align to the 5E instructional model (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate)
- Provide opportunities for students to generate their own questions to drive sense‑making and problem solving
Central Bucks uses Discovery Education Science Techbook as the core middle school science program. Science Techbook is aligned to the STEELS Standards and supports phenomena‑based learning that emphasizes investigation, reasoning, and application of scientific ideas. Through carefully sequenced learning progressions, students build knowledge and skills over time as they work to explain how and why phenomena occur.
Middle school science is designed to support all learners. Instruction focuses not simply on learning scientific facts, but on developing the intellectual tools students need to think critically, apply scientific reasoning, and continue learning science beyond the classroom.
The table below outlines the science topics taught at each grade level in middle school.
