Multi-Tiered System of Supports

Central Bucks School District has a collective responsibility to ensure all children grow and achieve.

Through access to rigorous curriculum, evidence-based instructional, social, emotional, and behavioral practices, and opportunities for intervention and enrichment, all students will meet or exceed grade-level standards and expectations. This shared vision develops life-long learners and responsible citizens.

About MTSS

What is MTSS?

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a whole child framework that provides instruction, targeted support, and enrichment to students in multiple areas. The MTSS framework includes standards aligned, culturally responsive instruction and programming, the use of data to inform decision making, and tiered support to meet the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs of all learners. MTSS creates a system for students’ strengths and needs to be discussed in a collaborative format to support the academic and social success of all learners.

A Whole Child Approach

An MTSS framework encompasses a whole child approach, offering processes to ensure the needs of every student are met in all areas of their educational experience. All areas of support for a student work together to form the larger picture of the “whole child,” helping us to identify and customize a student’s learning experience with the goal of each student finding success in the classroom.

Essential Elements of MTSS

The MTSS framework does not exclude any student from receiving tiered support and interventions; instead, it provides a method of measuring what each child needs to find success.

  • Three tiers of support
  • Data driven, team-based decision-making
  • Universal screening and progress monitoring
  • Research and evidence-based interventions and enrichments

Three Tiers of MTSS

Tier 3: Intensive Intervention

Provided to students who need additional supports in skills below their assigned grade level. Supported by research and/or evidence-based intervention.

Tier 2: Targeted Intervention

Provided to small groups of students, in addition to Tier 1, targeting skill-specific needs to enhance success with Tier 1 curriculum.

Tier 1: Core Instruction

Provided to all students within their daily classes.

How MTSS Works

Students may receive intervention support for varied lengths of time throughout the school year, depending upon need.

School Team Review

A group of people work together around a table.

Student data is consistently reviewed to determine what additional support might benefit a group or individual student. This support can be in the form of enrichment or intervention opportunities and may start at any point in the school year.

Support Provided

During scheduled intervention time, necessary support will be provided in Reading, Math, and/or social or behavioral areas, based on student need. Students receiving intervention are using additional resources and programs to enhance their understanding of grade-level content.

Data Review

Two people look at data on a computer.

After an intervention cycle (6-8 weeks), data is reviewed, comparing intervention support with student progress in class. Teams will determine if a student or group should receive increased or decreased levels of support moving forward.

Family communication is an ongoing priority of MTSS. If you are a CB parent and have questions specific to your child, please contact your child's teacher or your building principal.
