    Overview

    Today is DAY THREE of the 8th grade summary project!  You will use a new tech tool and new topics for the THIRD unit and add it to your final summary PP project.

    The purpose of this project is to review some of the essential content from each unit and creatively demonstrate your understanding of the content.  Today’s activity will be to review Unit THREE content and create an “infographic” that best represents a major event from the third unit.

    Today is the kickoff for the 8th grade summary project!  The 8th grade social studies teachers have selected a tech tool and topic for each unit we have studied so far that you will complete to create a final summary project.

    The purpose of this project is to review some of the essential content from each unit and creatively demonstrate your understanding of the content.  Today’s activity will be to review Unit 1 content and create a word cloud of people, places, and descriptor words that best represent the events and emotions of the first unit.

    Overview

    Today you are going to analyze the John Gast painting of “American Progress” and make explicit connections with the Industrial Revolution.

    Estimated Time

    25 minutes

    Explanation

    From 1803 to 1853, America was experiencing a great period of expansion. But WHAT was expanding? The Industrial Revolution led to slow but sweeping changes that aided in the migration to the west. Visit those changes based on the perspective of artist John Gast.

    Things to Know

    Tasks

    • Use the images and descriptions to locate specific parts of the Gast painting.
    • Analyze the concepts of 1)Industrial Revolution and 2)expansionism
    • Watch the enrichment video that connects this to the theme of “Manifest Destiny”
    • Submit your final responses in the “quiz” feature.

    Overview

    Today you are going to take a closer look at the Industrial Revolution by watching a short interactive video followed by a fun Morse Code activity.

    Explanation

    The Industrial Revolution was a time of mass transformation in many areas of manufacturing and industry. During this time society was transformed from  hand-made items to factory built items, short distrance communication to long distance communication, and so on. Our nation and world was changed forever.

    Things to Know

    Tasks

    • View the video clip from the Industrial Revolution
    • Be actively engaged in the video by responding to the questions within the video.
    • Solve the puzzle using Morse Code, an invention in the Industrial Revolution
    • Post your answer after cracking the code

    Overview

    Today you are going to take a closer look the Hollywood portrayal of John Smith and Pocahontas in order to answer the question, did Pocahontas save John Smith?

    This is just a short fun activity that requires you to analyze a few primary and secondary sources and practice that skill for when we get back.

    Explanation

    In the 1995 Disney movie there is a dramatic scene of John Smith about to be executed by Chief Powhatan.  But just before John Smith has his skull crushed, Pocahontas arrives and stops her father from killing Smith.  Is this an accurate portrayal of history?  You will analyze two primary sources to determine what parts of this scene are fact and fiction.

    • Examine the timeline of the time period (secondary source)

    Overview

    Today will be a review of how to analyze primary source documents and how they are used to study events in history. This is a refresher activity for all students.

    Estimated Time

    15-20minutes

    Explanation

    To analyze a primary source, you should follow the steps of ICEE: Identify, Context, Explore, Evaluate.  Today’s activity will have you recall how to complete each step of this process and how to recognize sources that are considered primary and secondary.

    General Announcement - Please check your email for a very important NHD announcement.

    Overview

    Today you will be analyzing your overall work for NHD by examining what has been completed and what still needs to be completed. This is NOT suggesting you should be working on your finished product.

    Looking at your finished NHD project, please describe what you have completed up until this point. In addition, please provide a description what what still needs to be done. Please be detailed with your information.

    Things to Know

    • The due date for NHD is no longer March 23rd. No new date has been established.
    • NHD projects ARE NOT to be completed during the time of closure.
    • A new due date will be established upon return to school.
    • STUDENTS WORKING WITH PARTNERS SHOULD NOT WORK ON THE FINISHED PRODUCT TOGETHER AS PER BUCKS COUNTY'S AGGRESSIVE SOCIAL DISTANCING POLICY.

    • Submit a written description of your progress of your NHD project as described above. Please submit in a word document on Canvas.
