• Update - April 5 2020 - 6:40 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    Beginning tomorrow, April 6, 2020, we will enter the second phase of our distance learning plan (DLP2). Our teachers and students will begin to work together in an entirely new way, so that we may support student learning during this prolonged period of national crisis.

    We encourage our students to do their best and to communicate with their teachers for any assistance required as necessary. Student work completed from home will focus on learning rather than grades. Under the current circumstances we realize many of our secondary students have had to step into roles of taking care of younger siblings or family members, performing essential work in our communities, managing other responsibilities, and facing numerous other challenges.

    Many students and families understandably have questions regarding how this temporary transition will impact the college admissions process. This is an incredibly unique time in our nation’s history, and colleges understand the singular challenges districts are facing.     Elementary students will begin utilizing new tools and new technology. While our teachers have gone to extraordinary lengths to connect with our elementary students and ensure they feel supported in their learning, this new reality asks them to work under new asynchronous and synchronous formats. Our Central Bucks teachers will continue to support and guide all our students through this new process. We will adjust to the new norms created, remaining flexible working together with students and families.

    We are all appreciative of the community support. This situation has definitely created many competing priorities, with people balancing their own health and the needs of their family while trying to find the necessary time to devote to their work and family responsibilities. Our teachers will keep supporting, keep problem-solving, keep communicating, keep thinking, keep celebrating and keep working together to adjust, adapt, regroup and renew our efforts to help all students move forward.

    As this crisis continues, the mental health and well-being of our students and families continues to be of deep concern to us. Support is available – please review and consider the community and mental health resources on our website; we will continue to revise this list as more are brought to our attention.     • DLP2 Notes: Our teachers may be recording their check-ins and Teams calls for their own reference in order to build on their instruction or for notes. Please make note of the Teams call etiquette on our website and review behavioral expectations with your children. Please be reminded, April 9, 10 and 13 will remain as days off, with “no school” for students.

    • Secondary Grading Considerations: The Central Bucks School District has transitioned to an online platform for the delivery of instruction and adopted a PASS/FAIL policy for assessment for the duration of the crisis. In formulating this approach, we have sought to address the needs of all our students, while appropriately responding to the enormity of the situation in which we find ourselves. Please read the additional considerations factored into this decision, as well as advanced placement course exceptions, at cbsd.org/secondarydlpgrading.

    Update - March 31, 2020 - 8:15 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    During yesterday afternoon’s public address, Gov. Wolf extended his “stay at home” order to at least April 30, 2020. His directive for schools is that they should remain closed until further notice. View the governor’s press conference here.

    He thanked Pennsylvanians for doing what is necessary to help flatten the curve and attempt to prevent the overwhelming of our healthcare systems. We would like to echo those same sentiments and thank our families for all you are doing to STAY HOME, STAY CALM, and STAY SAFE.

    Based on the governor’s directive, our schools will remain closed for the coming weeks. As noted in our previous communication, “Phase 2” of our Distance Learning Plan (DLP) will begin on April 6, 2020. Participation in this phase of the plan is not optional. Our teachers continue to prepare and work diligently to educate all students under our new format. I would like to thank our teachers and express our gratitude for their work and every little way they continue to selflessly help our children.

    Understandably, our students and families have questions about a number of aspects of Phase 2. We are responding to these questions individually, and will continue to revise and add to our frequently asked questions at www.cbsd.org/help. A few additional notes for your consideration:

    • Student Schedules: The schedules included in the presentation are samples. Your classroom teachers and/or building principals will be sharing additional communications this week that provide more clarification.
    • Elementary Phase 2 DLP: Elementary education will be conducted mostly asynchronously. Students will not be required to log on at a specific time and interact with a lesson. The instruction will be recorded so that students may log on and complete assignments at a time that works best for your family’s schedule.
    • Secondary Grades: Our high school students and families have asked about how third marking period grades, and the PASS/FAIL grades will appear on transcripts and affect GPAs. We are working through these more detailed matters now and ask that our families continue to be patient as we prepare additional communication that speaks directly to the concerns of our high school students.
    • Parent Portal: Please be advised that as we transition to Phase 2 of the DLP, the assignment and grading view feature in the Infinite Campus parent portal will be temporarily closed for view. We are working with Infinite Campus to develop a customized reporting system to reflect the PASS/FAIL component aspect of Phase 2 of our DLP. Once this process is complete, details will be communicated to our families.

    I wanted to share this quote with our community this evening and personally express how humbled I have been to observe the brilliance that surrounds me daily. From our teachers to our administrators, to our community I am constantly reminded how blessed I am to work in this wonderful school district. I especially would like to thank those who have helped me personally in numerous aspects of solving the myriad of issues this crisis has delivered.     Update - March 29, 2020 - 5 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    I hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy. As you know, Governor Wolf’s directive will keep our schools closed until at least April 6, 2020. It is our belief that while our community is working hard to maintain strict social distancing, it is likely that our schools will remain closed beyond that date.

    Since the closure began, our school community has focused on helping students and families – despite the distance that separates us. It’s important to celebrate what this collective strength has helped us to accomplish!

    • With support from our Facilities and Energy Management Operations Team and others, our Technology and Innovation office deployed more than 1,000 devices to students in grades kindergarten through six, and grade 12 last week. This effort was intended to ensure that our students are equipped to fully participate in distance learning initiatives.
    • On Wednesday, Barclay Elementary School hosted a “farmer’s market” food distribution event. More than 3,000 pounds of food were distributed. These events will continue weekly until the crisis ends. This event is in addition to the regular lunch distributions taking place according to the schedule at www.cbsd.org/food.
    • Despite the barriers we face, our teachers continue to create exciting learning opportunities for our students. Central Bucks middle school science teachers encouraged students to participate in the “Flux Challenge,” a series of daily, online STEAM challenges focused on creating, tinkering, and making, for students of all ages. Students were encouraged to think, plan, problem solve, execute, and reflect – all without screens. They invented, designed bridges, and created their own games!
    • Our staff development team, principals, and administrators have assisted our teachers by engaging in hours of online meetings and other professional development events aimed at helping them be successful in engaging and supporting our students as we prepare to move into our distance learning planned instruction phase. All students will be required to participate in this instructional format.
    • Our principals, faculty, and students continue to connect and share moments of joy! Watch a video that captures just a snapshot of the positive, resilient spirit of Central Bucks here.

    Helping our families through this crisis continues to call upon our collective strength and ingenuity. Our administrators and teachers have forged ahead to create the distance learning initiative, understanding everyone needs to exhibit patience and flexibility. These efforts include preparing to shift our distance learning to the next phase, new learning.

    I ask everyone to remain patient remembering that this method for teaching and learning is new and together we will find success as we proceed forward in providing educational opportunities for all students. Our teachers are dedicated, focused, and professional. However, I ask that everyone remain mindful that our teachers are operating under the same stressful environment that this school closure has brought upon us. Our teachers have children at home and families to care for while working in a brand-new online environment.  I can assure our community they have worked tirelessly to prepare for this next phase of distance learning, and that we will continue to communicate with our families as we evolve throughout this process.

    The details of this new phase are outlined for families on the attached presentation. For those who are visually impaired, an audio version is also available, and a text only version is available on our website. We ask that you take some time to review this with your child(ren). While we are all mindful that this educational model is new, we know that our students and families will approach this concept with patience and enthusiasm. 

    Our start date for “Distance Learning Phase 2” is Monday, April 6 (more details on this roll out are outlined in the presentation document). Our teachers will use the next week to ensure they are fully prepared to engage their students. They will be reaching out to students with detailed information and will continue to maintain a robust routine of interaction throughout this process. I have complete confidence that our teachers will attain success under this new format. I am proud of our Central Bucks School District teachers and express my gratitude for their commitment to excellence.

    A few additional notes as we look to the weeks to come:

    • Our calendar remains the same at this time. This means that April 8 remains a half day for secondary students, and April 9, 10 and 13 will be “no school” for students. In the event that changes are made, they will be communicated to families immediately.
    • While we are hopeful that we will be able to conduct our commencement ceremonies, alternative plans are being made for a modified ceremony in the event that schools do not reopen. A June 12 graduation date is still anticipated.

    We are strongest together, and while we have overcome numerous challenges, there are certainly more to come. I ask that we continue to take this one day at a time. Continue to be gentle and kind with one another and take care of each other.

    Update - March 23, 2020 - 9 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families, 

    This afternoon at 2 p.m., Governor Tom Wolf extended his order to close schools, daycares, and other facilities for a period of two weeks. As a result, the earliest we could return to school, if possible, is April 6, 2020. His message was simple, he is asking us to STAY CALM, STAY HOME, AND STAY SAFE. 

    Perhaps what resonates most, is that the lives of our fellow Pennsylvanians depend on our willingness to observe strict social distancing. He has issued a “stay at home” order for a number of counties, primarily in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania, including Bucks. Watch Governor Wolf’s press conference and the update from Secretary of Health Levine. The secretary of health explained that these are essential measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. See the attached “Stay at Home Order Guidance” document for more details on Governor Wolf’s directive. Please be reminded, that as we continue to practice strict social distancing, ALL district buildings, athletic fields, stadiums, playgrounds and properties are closed during this time. 

    The students, faculty, staff, and families of Central Bucks School District have approached these measures with grace, hope, and compassion. We are so proud of the resilience with which our students and teachers have approached our distance learning initiative. It is clear that our families understand the challenges that we face as a school district during this national crisis. We are grateful for this support, and for your continued patience as we plan, adjust, and do all that we can to help our students. 

    Each day brings new information, but questions remain. Please know that we are actively working together as an administrative team to adjust our school year as timelines change. As more information becomes available from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the legislature, we will be able to make our final determinations and communicate these plans to our families. 

    Together, we will take this crisis one day at a time, doing all we can to keep our families safe. This includes practicing practical hygiene measures like washing our hands for at least 20 seconds, avoiding touching your face, staying home and practicing social distancing, and monitoring your health if you believe you may have been exposed, including the following steps: 

    • Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day and monitor for fever (100°F/37.8°C or higher). 
    • Watch for cough or trouble breathing. 
    • Contact the Bucks County Department of Health at 215-345-3318. 

    We will continue to add resources and links to our website to help families understand COVID-19, access food and other types of community assistance, access emotional and mental health supports, and help their children effectively participate in our distance learning initiatives. Please note, applications for free and reduced lunch can be found online here. We are processing applications daily.  

    Thank you to our elementary and grade 12 families for taking time to complete the technology survey. We will use this information to plan ways to better support all of our students’ distance learning needs. Look for more details in the coming days.

    Update March 21, 2020 - 8:50 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    We would like to thank our school community for their continued support and for demonstrating such kindness, patience, and willingness to help during this difficult time.

    We again encourage all of our community to follow the guidelines our government officials are asking of us. It is essential to practice appropriate social distancing and good personal hygiene.

    Please see the updated food assistance guidelines below. 

    In order to better serve our families in need of food assistance during the closure, several changes are being made to the district's food assistance program beginning on Monday, March 23.

    • Distribution will take place on Mondays and Thursdays, with more than one meal (three meals on Mondays and two on Thursdays) provided at each pickup so that families need only visit their pickup site twice per week. Distribution takes place between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
    • Barclay Elementary School will continue daily distributions.

    Update March 19, 2020 - 7:45 p.m.

    Dear Members of the CBSD Community,

    We have been informed that a student in our community (Titus Elementary) has tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Household contacts are undergoing diagnostic evaluation, and we await test results for these patients. The student is under the care of a physician. As you can imagine, this is a difficult time for this family. Now more than ever, we need to treat one another with care, understanding, and respect.

    Central Bucks School District is following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance and working with the Bucks County Health Department, which is following the necessary protocols for such cases. At the same time, we are working to trace these individuals’ steps and to communicate with their close contacts. We will provide guidance personally to those who have had close contact with the confirmed patient.

    Please be reminded, our community has been asked to take important steps to implement social distancing. Please review that guidance on the CDC website

    Of course, this first case has significant implications for the district. I have been in close touch with Dr. David Damsker, Director of Bucks County Department of Health. I will continue to write to the community to give news of any new decisions affecting the school district.

    We have provided resources, links, and more information related to COVID-19 on our website at www.cbsd.org/covid. We strongly advise that you contact us if you have been in close contact with a patient who has tested positive for COVID-19.

    If you believe you may have been exposed, you can take these steps to monitor your health:

    • Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day and monitor for fever (100°F/37.8°C or higher).

    • Contact the Bucks County Department of Health at 215-345-3318.

    If you become sick with a fever (100°F/37.8°C or higher), cough frequently, or have trouble breathing, take these important steps:

    • Avoid contact with others.
    • Seek medical care by calling ahead before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room.
    • Report your symptoms as well as your recent travel history or any exposure to others who are unwell.
    • If you need to seek medical care for other reasons, call ahead to your doctor and tell them about your recent travel to an area with widespread or ongoing community spread of COVID-19 and about any exposure to a person with the illness.
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

    Update - March 18, 2020 - 8 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    First, allow me to say thank you to our community for the kind messages of support for the Distance Learning initiative! Our spirits are lifted and the encouragement of our families is heartwarming as we continue to work together as a community to manage this ongoing crisis.

    Second, this evening’s message is focused on providing some updates related to technology, as well as some additional resources we have become aware of.

    Device Support for Staff and Secondary Students (Grades 7-11)

    We know that some are currently dealing with broken laptops requiring a technician. To assist with this, our Technology and Innovation Department is again offering a Drive-Through Tech Support event on Friday, March 20, from 8:30 – 10:30 AM at the CBSD Educational Service Center (ESC). The ESC is located at 16 Welden Drive, Doylestown, PA  18901.

    Only a limited number of time slots will be made available, in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines. This support is limited only to staff and secondary students (Grades 7-11) who have an issue with their district-provided device.  

    In the event that device peripherals (pens, chargers, batteries, etc.) stop working or need replacement, families do not need to purchase them through MyPaymentsPlus at this time. These devices can be bought directly from Amazon here: https://www.cbsd.org/Page/51509

    In order to participate, please complete the following two links:

    1. Place a Web Help Desk Ticket so that we may prepare for your drop-off.
    2. Select a drop-off time via Sign-up Genius

    2. A technician will greet you at your car for check-in procedures.
    3. You will park your car while we work on your device and wait until we are completed.

    We have further developed our “Emotional and Mental Health Support” page located within the www.cbsd.org/covid section of our website with additional mental health resources that our counselors and school psychologists have identified. A “Community Resource” page has also been added with information to help families who require emergency assistance with food, fuel oil, medicine, and emergency shelter.

    Lastly, I want to thank our community again for their support. A special thank you to our teachers. Our teachers are amazing and the dedication to our children inspiring. I personally want every teacher to know how appreciative your superintendent, principals, fellow colleagues, and school community are for your extraordinary efforts.     Update - March 16, 2020 - 8:30 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    We continue to navigate the continued challenges associated with the social distancing that is meant to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. We would like to provide you with a few reminders and updates.

    Food Assistance – STARTED MARCH 16, 2020 - The food assistance program started today with distribution at each of our planned sites. Our principals are working closely with Aramark Food Services and other staff to manage this effort. Details may be found at www.cbsd.org/food.

    Distance Learning – STARTED MARCH 17, 2020 - Tomorrow morning, the district’s Distance Learning initiative will get underway. The support our families have shown for this initiative, combined with the flexibility and enthusiasm of our students and teachers, has been nothing short of incredible!

    Several families have offered to volunteer and/or provide additional food. We are so grateful for these offers of help and assistance. At this time, volunteers are not needed for food distribution. We are fortunate to have adequate staffing in place to support our families. In addition, in order for us to maintain the social distancing necessary, we will be operating with as few individuals on campuses as possible. We encourage food donations be provided to local food banks.

    We know that you have many questions now and will have more in the days to come. While some of the more complex questions can’t be answered yet, we have created a page on our website to house resources and frequently asked questions.     Update - March 14, 2020 - 7:10 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    Yesterday afternoon, the Central Bucks School District and all school districts across Bucks County made the collective decision to close operations through Sunday, March 29, 2020 (a period of closure that could be extended further, based on any number of rapidly changing variables). Shortly after that, Governor Tom Wolf ordered all schools closed in an effort to help stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) through significant social distancing.

    Over the last 24 hours, we have been engaged in a discussion with local, state, and federal authorities to compile information and resources to help our community process and better understand the impact of this closure.

    Food Assistance

    Beginning Monday, March 16, the district will be administering a food assistance program for those families who are currently enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. Detailed instructions on this program may be found at www.cbsd.org/food.

    Distance Learning

    As these rapid developments unfolded, our teachers were engaged in preparations for the Distance Learning initiative that has been the subject of significant coordination and discussion. We are prepared for this initiative to begin Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Our teachers will deploy resources and activities intended to help our students stay engaged during the closure. These assignments and activities will be focused on review and enrichment for all students, and will be tailored to individual grade levels, kindergarten through 12. This material is not meant to replace in-person classroom instruction. Assignments and activities completed during the closure will not be graded.

    We also encourage our students to read during this time, and as we become aware of additional activities and resources that our students and families might find useful, we will post them to our website. It bears repeating – nothing can replace the rigorous instruction that our students receive when in our classrooms with our teachers.

    We know you have many questions, and frankly, not all of ours have been answered, but we have received direction from the Commonwealth that suggests a relaxation of the 180-day requirement. In the coming weeks we hope to have more details on this measure, and what it will mean for Central Bucks as we help our students successfully reach the end of the school year.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    At 11:45 a.m. today, March 13, 2020, the Bucks County Commissioners ordered a Declaration of Disaster Emergency and the activation of the county’s Emergency Management Center for support and to respond and coordinate efforts with local municipalities and other partners. 

    In close coordination with the superintendents of all Bucks County public school districts, the Executive Director of the Bucks County Intermediate Unit, the Director of the Bucks County Health Department, the Director of Bucks County Emergency Management Services, and the Bucks County Commissioners, The Central Bucks School District will be closing effective immediately through Sunday, March 29, 2020.  This period of closure could be extended further, based on any number of rapidly changing variables. 

    It is possible that executive orders from either the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or the United States federal government will further expand upon or define this period of closure.  At this time, this decision has not yet been officially mandated by either state or federal government authorities. This decision has, however, been fully discussed locally with all public school leaders and the appropriate county government officials. 

    This closure no doubt raises many more questions than answers.  The district will work in full cooperation with local, state, and federal authorities to compile information and resources that speak to the closure and its impact on the community. 

    This decision was not made quickly or without significant reflection and discussion. In fact, the county’s school leaders have spent countless hours working in-district and across the county to evaluate the everchanging nature of the coronavirus pandemic.  We worked to establish best practices following CDC guidelines, in partnership with the Bucks County Health Department and Emergency Management Services leaders, to limit social interactions in an effort to proactively protect against community transmission.  We were hopeful that these measures would enable our district to remain open using social distancing, modifications to schedules, visitors, and other activities.  With the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania executive order yesterday that essentially shutdown neighboring Montgomery County, the impact on local school district daily operations has been substantial.  A number of our staff live in Montgomery County, resulting in obvious difficulties for them to come to work. Today, on a call Bucks County superintendents and officials, the superintendents unanimously supported a countywide closure for all Bucks County public schools.

    Therefore, Central Bucks will cease providing educational services to all children/students effective Friday, March 13, 2020. This includes all special education and related services.  All meetings, activities, athletics, and related school events are postponed and subject to reschedule or cancellation.  No community use of the school facilities will be permitted during this time.  No transportation will be provided.  No before or after school childcare will be offered.  Everything, in short, is cancelled or postponed.

    School personnel and students are prohibited from entering school facilities; however, a limited number of essential staff may be able to perform essential functions such as running payroll, cleaning facilities, maintaining communication systems, and providing security as needed.  This is to be determined. 

    All school employees and contractors will be contacted shortly via email with additional information.

    It is uncertain at this time, absent clear direction from the Commonwealth, about the status of these days and whether they will need to be made up in the future.  As we learn more, I will continue to update you.

    Update, March 12, 2020 - 3 p.m.

    The Central Bucks School District is enforcing a postponement of all spring athletics effective immediately. This postponement will continue until at least April 14, 2020, when a reevaluation of the community health environment will be assessed.     Dear Central Bucks School District community,

    First and foremost – our schools are not closed. Please be reminded – in the event schools close, the notification would be issued via Blackboard text and email, the district website, and district social media accounts.

    The events surrounding the spread and impact of the coronavirus continue to create an unprecedented set of challenges for our school district and community.  As information continues to emerge about the scope and impact of this virus, we face many decisions regarding the continuation, postponement and cancellation of events in our schools. 

    The fluidity that characterizes this developing situation requires hourly monitoring and adjusting.  From the onset, we have worked in consultation with local and state health officials, as well as our neighboring Bucks County districts to gather, assess and communicate accurate information and subsequent recommendations.  We have taken care to involve our stakeholders, knowing that every action we take creates a proportionate level of response, as well as community impact. 

    We are sensitive to the anxiety that this uncertainty causes for our families and our community.  In consultation with local and state officials, as well as our neighboring Bucks County districts, we will continue to monitor and update you with the latest information.

    Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) extended their recommendations to practice social distancing in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Effective immediately, all after school and evening activities are cancelled until April 14. All district facilities will be closed each weekend beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. This directive includes off-site home and school and PTO events, and banquets. We are evaluating the spring sports season in consultation with the PIAA. An update on the status of athletics will be issued.

    I thank each of you for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate these circumstances in a constantly evolving landscape and ask for your continued support and understanding as we strive to set conditions in the best interests of all involved.

    Update, March 11, 2020 - 11:30 a.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    We would like to follow up with a number of clarifications and additional notes as we continue our planning efforts. 

    • Travel and Trips - All out of district travel (including all field trips) is suspended indefinitely. Travel inside the district will continue until further notice, including Bucks County Intermediate Unit and MBIT events and programming.
    • 2019-2020 Calendar Change - Last evening, the school board approved April 28, 2020 (primary election day) as a professional development day with no school for students. This decision does not impact end of year calendar days. 
    • Class of 2020 Commencement - Friday, June 12, 2020 has been set as our graduation day.
      • CB East – Ceremony will begin at 2 p.m.
      • CB West – Ceremony will begin at 4:15 p.m.
      • CB South – Ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m.

    Update, March 10, 2020 - 8:37 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    As we continue to engage in planning and discussion around the impact of coronavirus, both in and around our community, please be advised of the following key areas:

    Travel and Trips

    After consulting with local and state health officials and school leadership, all Central Bucks School District field trips, conferences, and district approved travel plans that take our students and/or staff out of the commonwealth or the country are indefinitely cancelled.  Information (including any plans for rescheduling) for specific groups will be communicated directly to affected students and families. Travel within the district, from school to school, will continue at this time.

    We will reexamine this directive regularly, taking into consideration the most up to date information and recommendations.  We acknowledge the impact of this measure as we take into consideration the safety, health and well-being of students, employees and families.

    Community Based Instruction and Work-Based Learning

    For students who receive special education services, the instruction provided will be for maintenance and reinforcement of skills, not new instruction or IEP-goal based instruction.

    For the time being, Community Based Instruction (CBI) and Work-Based Learning (WBL) will be addressed differently to provide a similar experience but in environments we believe are safe for our students.

    The Special Education Department administration will work collaboratively with principals and special education teachers to make these planning adjustments for the coming days and weeks.


    PIAA state playoff games are still being played as scheduled. This plan has the potential to change, and we will continue to monitor advisements and communications from the PIAA.

    Cleaning of Our Buildings and Buses

    We continue to employ an elevated disinfection and cleaning program within our schools and buses, paying close attention to high touch/high traffic areas. Examples of these include desktops, doorknobs, and bathrooms.

    The cleaning process utilizes products on the Environmental Protection Agency’s registered antimicrobial products list for use against COVID-19 – both in buses and in buildings. We are grateful that the regular professional development that our facilities and energy management operations personnel engage in has prepared them for the protocols they are currently engaged in.

    We have also consulted with Bucks County Emergency Management, and reviewed information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in order to ensure that the protocols and procedures we are employing represent best practices and are effective against COVID-19.

    Distance Learning

    Similar to school districts and universities across the Commonwealth and the nation, we are actively engaged in the planning and execution of a “distance learning” initiative that is ready to launch in the event of a prolonged school closure.  Our distance learning plan will enable us to keep all students, kindergarten through grade 12, engaged in appropriate and meaningful learning opportunities.  Your student’s principal is working with teachers and we will communicate additional details to our families in a follow up communication in the event it is required.

    Update, March 8, 2020 - 4:55 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    Based on the most recent information available, and in consultation with the Bucks County Department of Health, all Central Bucks School District schools will open and operate on a regular schedule tomorrow, Monday, March 9, 2020.

    We are aware of the heightened anxiety and concern that is present in and around our community. Many of us are parents ourselves, and we take our responsibility to care for the safety and well-being of more than 18,000 children very seriously. We understand and respect the concerns of our families and will continue to base our decisions on facts, while working in consultation with local and state experts.

    In addition to our cooperation with the Bucks County Health Department, we have also received advice and information from Bucks County Emergency Management, the Pennsylvania Health Department, leadership at Doylestown Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    These experts have all advised us that our best defense is to control personal transmission through good hygiene, proper handwashing, and staying home when sick. Education can help reduce the anxiety we feel and empower us to make calm, informed decisions. When seeking information, we recommend consulting the CDC (www.cdc.gov) and World Health Organization (www.who.int) websites. There you will find resources that explain who is at greatest risk, how to stay healthy, symptoms to look for, and more. Both contain a wealth of information that can help parents and guardians educate themselves about coronavirus, as well as answer questions your children may have.

    We will continue to employ an elevated cleaning protocol in our buildings and buses, while paying extra attention to bathrooms, desktops, door knobs any other high touch/high traffic areas. As we explained, all buildings and buses are cleaned using products on the Environmental Protection Agency’s registered antimicrobial products list for use against COVID-19.

    The challenges associated with COVID-19 are likely to continue for some time. We are grateful for the strength that comes from a community that cares about our schools, and for the excellent work of our administration, faculty, and staff.

    Update, March 7, 2020 - 6:55 p.m.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    We have a number of positive things to report to our families tonight. As reported by the County of Bucks' press release last evening, an investigation by county and state health officials has found no evidence of the coronavirus among those in our community who came into contact with an infected person recently.

    We continue to engage in the deep cleaning process as outlined in the update released yesterday afternoon. As of this writing, all 23 Central Bucks schools have been cleaned and sanitized, as have all school buses. We appreciate the hard work of our facilities and energy management operations personnel, as well as our bus drivers, who worked efficiently and thoroughly in order to accomplish this task. As we explained yesterday, all buildings and buses were deep cleaned using products on the Environmental Protection Agency’s registered antimicrobial products list for use against COVID-19.

    We continue to work closely with both the Pennsylvania and Bucks County health departments to monitor this situation and map appropriate next steps based on the most recent information.

    It bears repeating that practicing good hand washing, coughing and sneezing into your elbow, and staying home when you are sick as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local health officials is the most effective defense against getting sick with coronavirus, or any common cold or flu – or passing on illness to others.     Update - 1:55 p.m.

    Good afternoon Central Bucks families,

    In light of today’s challenging situation, we would like to provide a few brief updates to answer some common questions, and help our families plan for the coming days.

    • Central Bucks Community School aftercare programming will close at 4:30 p.m. Parents are asked to pick up their children as early as possible so that deep cleaning of all facilities may begin.
    • All Central Bucks School District buildings will be closed beginning at today’s dismissal and through the weekend (3/6/20-3/8/20). There are no after school activities or practices beginning today, and no outside organizations may use our indoor facilities.
    • All in-district after school and evening activities are cancelled. Planned band and athletic activities that are scheduled to take place off-site will continue as scheduled. Pickup will occur in the school parking lot, but no one will be given access to the school building.
    • Deep cleaning of all Central Bucks School buildings will begin this afternoon immediately following the closing of schools and continue throughout the weekend. 
    • In addition, all buses will be cleaned and disinfected.
    • Both Central Bucks and First Student buses will be cleaned utilizing the same protocol and products.
    • All buildings and buses will be deep cleaned using products on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) registered antimicrobial products list for use against COVID-19 and industry best practices that our facilities staff use during every cold and flu season.

    At this time no decisions about the reopening of schools have been made. We will continue to work with the Bucks County Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Health Department to evaluate the most current information throughout the weekend.     Message to Families - 5:36 A.M.

    Dear Central Bucks families,

    Late last night, I was informed by Dr. David Damsker, Director of the Bucks County Health Department, and Dr. Sharon Watkins, State Epidemiologist of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, that members of the Central Bucks community were exposed to a confirmed case of the coronavirus that originated in another state.  At this moment, we understand that these Central Bucks community members have had contact with Butler Elementary School, Titus Elementary School, Tamanend Middle School, Tohickon Middle School, and Central Bucks South High School.  The Bucks County Health Department is currently evaluating these individuals to determine when they may return to school.

    It is important to reiterate that there are no known or reported cases of coronavirus in Central Bucks School District, Bucks County or in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Out of an abundance of caution, I have decided to close the above schools Friday, March 6, 2020 to perform deep cleaning of all impacted facilities.

    Throughout this evolving situation, I will remain in contact with both the Bucks County Health Department and the Pennsylvania Department of Health.  Additional updates to the community will be shared as we learn more information.

    You can find additional resources about the coronavirus at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website (CDC Website) which is updated frequently with information about the coronavirus. The CDC also offers helpful FAQs about coronavirus.  The PA Department of Health Coronavirus Website is a good source of information as well.  If you have questions about your own health, please consult your medical professionals.

    Coronavirus is transmitted like the common flu virus and can be easily eliminated with good cleaning and personal hygiene practices.  Common symptoms for coronavirus include fever, cough and/or shortness of breath.   Some tips from the website to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, such as coronavirus, include:

    • Cover coughs or sneezes with your elbow. Do not use your hands!
    • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
    • If soap and water are not available, use a 60% or higher alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    • Clean surfaces frequently, including countertops, light switches, cell phones, electronic devices, remotes, and other frequently touched items.
    • Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick to help prevent others from catching your illness.  Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
