The world of Homer.
Okay, as part of our exploration of epic, we are also going to read The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.  Why, you ask?  Because it works beautifully as a mock epic, taking many of the conventions of epic and turning them on their head, inside out, and backwards.  Epic has a job: to celebrate the greatness of a great man.  We find that hard to do anymore and mock-epic steps up to show us how hard it is to be great in our world today.
