    Dates:  4/20 and 4/21

    Topic:  Introduction to World War I- Setting the Stage

    Materials Needed:  On-line text-book.  Power Points (Sent Via Email). World War I Packet. Video Clips and Links sent via Email.

    Estimated Time:  45 Minutes

    Objectives:  1)  Assess the Impact and Legacy of Imperialism

                         2)  Analyze the underlying causes of World War I

                         3)  Assess the impact of the Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

     

    Tasks:

    1. Review the Imperialism Recap Power Point (sent via Email.) Respond to the following questions:

                 a.Who was the “Winner” in imperialism?

                 b.For Great Britain what was their major geopolitical priority?

                 c.What was meant by the saying “The sun never sets on the British Empire?” 

    1. Attend today’s Team’s Meeting.
    2. Preview World War I - Review PPT slide 4 and respond to the prompts in your notes.  What is a common element between the prompts?
    3. Continue to Review the PPT- Slides 2 and 3 and record your thoughts to the prompts as well- particularly no. 3 on Slide 3.
    4. Read Chapter 13 Section 1.
    5. Complete Packet Page 5 (World War I Packet) using Ch. 13, Sect. 1.
    6. Review PPT slides 5-19. On slide 19- what is Otto Von Bismark Referring to?
    7. Watch the BBC’s Days that Shook the World- the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kAHDf_Ux6M
    • Watch only until the 24 minute mark.
    • Use the last page of the packet as your viewing guide. You may answer the questions if you like.
    • Also, in a short paragraph, write down your reaction to the video. A quick review of the show, and include your reaction- questions? Surprises?  Suspicions, etc?  Keep a copy in your records but also share the paragraph with me in an email or as an attachment.

    DL 2  World War I Unit Day 2

    Dates:  4/22 and 4/23

    Topic:  World War I-  The Guns of August/ the start of the Fighting

    Materials Needed:  On-line text-book.  Power Points (Sent Via Email). World War I Packet. Video Clips and Links sent via Email.

    Estimated Time:  45 Minutes

    Objectives:  1)  Understand the beginnings of WWI

                         2)  Analyze the impact of the Alliances in making a local conflict a global crisis

                         3)  Evaluate the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Warfare

                         4)  Understand the sequence of events following the Assassination and the Outbreak of war.

                         5) Explain and assess the German Plan to avoid a 2-front war.

     Tasks: 

    1. Attend today’s Team’s Meeting. Review the Imperialism Recap Power Point (sent via Email) slides 20-32
    2. Watch the History Channel Video on the “How a Wrong Turn that Started WWI”. This video pairs nicely with the 30 Days that Shook the World Video on the Assassination that we watched at the start of the Unit. As you watch this clip, answer the following:
      1. What was the objective of Bosnian Nationalists in 1908?
      2. What is different in this version of the story from BBC story that you watched yesterday with regard to where Gavrillo Princip was?
      3. What explanation is given as to why the driver went down the wrong street? Any evidence of the chauffeur being a part of the plan?
      4. What do you think of the Archduke’s decision to go and visit the wounded as opposed to get out of the city?
    • Save your responses to be included as part of the DLUO for WWI.

     

    1. Read packet pages 9, 13, and 14 and answer the related questions. These pages help to explain the diplomatic issues following the assassination and Germany’s invasion of Belgium on their way to France.  Focus on the atrocities of the German troops as the passed through neutral Belgium.
    2. Watch Crash Course “Who Started World War I”. This video does a really good job of putting the events leading to the outbreak of war into context. Please watch.
    3. Packet Pages 10-12. Please read and complete these packet pages. Please note that page 12 follows Chapter 13, Section 2. 
    4. Read Chapter 13 Section 2.

    DL 2  World War I Unit Day 3

    Dates:  4/29 and 4/30

    Topic:  World War I-  Industrialized War- How WWI was fought.

    Materials Neede9:  On-line text-book.  Power Points (Sent Via Email). World War I Packet. Video Clips and Links sent via Email.

    Estimated Time:  45 Minutes

    Objectives:  1)  Understand the impact of Modern Weaponry on Warfare

                         2) Analyze the impact of modern weapons and the failure to adapt strategies accordingly

                         3)  Evaluate the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Warfare

                         4)  Assess the Battle of the Somme                      

     

    Tasks:

    1. Review PPT Slides 28-67- overview of the fighting and impact of Propaganda 
    1. Read Chapter 13, Section 3 and complete packet page 22 
    1. Read Packet Page 16 on The Somme and answer the questions on page 17.
    2. Watch the Documentary “The Battle of the Somme” sent out via Email. Try to complete the viewing guide as you watch the video -  2nd to last packet page.
    3. Respond to the prompts on slides 61 and 62 in 2 well written paragraphs that you will share with me via email- attach a word doc.
    4. Begin work on the DLUO for WWI send previously via email.

     

    Submit-   Response to prompts on slides 61 and 62 with your reaction to rushing off to war   and how your perspective has changed after experiencing combat in the trenches.


     

    DL 2  World War I Unit Day 4

    Dates:  5/4 and 5/5

    Topic:  World War I-  Focus on 1917- War on the Eastern Front ends and the United States Joins the War;   War comes to an End.  November 11, 2018.

    Materials Needed:  On-line text-book.  Power Points (Sent Via Email). World War I Packet. Video Clips and Links sent via Email.

    Estimated Time:  45 Minutes

    Objectives

             1)  Understand why Russia ended the War with Germany on the Eastern Front and

                   the impact that had on the war.

             2)  Identify an assess the reasons for the United States entering the war and analyze

                   the impact their involvement had on the war.

             3)  Evaluate the events that led to the end of the fighting in WWI.

             4)  Analyze the purpose and significance of the Armistice that went into effect on

                  Nov. 11, 1918 at 11:00 a.m.                         

     Tasks:

    1. Attend Meeting in Teams to review past assignments and material and to discuss new materials and future assignments.
    2. Review and discuss slides 64-74 detailing the end of the war and eventual Armistice.
    3. Read Chapter 13 Section 3 in the on line textbook
    4. Complete Packet Page 22 “War Affects the World”
    5. Complete Packet Page 26 on the Zimmerman Note
    6. Watch the two video clips sent via email on the end of WWI.
    7. Continue work on the Distance Learning Unit Overview

    Dates:  5/6 and 5/7

    Topic:  The Treaty of Versailles and the Legacy of WWI

    Materials Needed:  On-line text-book.  Power Points (Sent Via Email). World War I Packet. Video Clips and Links sent via Email.

    Estimated Time:  45 Minutes

    Objectives

             1) Understand and assess the Legacy of WWI

             2) Evaluate the proposals and demands made at the Paris Peace Conference

             3) Analyze the terms of the Treaty of Versailles and assess its impact on Germany

             4) Compare the goals and objectives of the Treaty of Versailles with that of the Congress of Vienna.

                               

    Tasks:

    1. Attend Morning meeting in Teams.
    2. Review PPT Slides 75-79 on the Treaty of Versailles
    3. Watch the Crash Course Video on WWI as a review of the War, and a video overview of the Treaty of Versailles, and the video on Wilson’s 14 points and answer the questions in the viewing guide, previously sent via Email.
    4. Read and complete packet pages 27, 34 (Using Chapter 13 Sect. 4), and packet pages 37-42.

    Please submit the following assignments via email on or before our next class meeting:   A picture of your completed packet pages 34 and 42, and the completed WWI Video Viewing Guide word document.
