Reading Day 10:
Overview- Fiction Reading
Estimated Time- 45 minutes
Explanation- In class, we read independent books daily, and monitor our thinking while we read. When we finish reading, we often write about what we read. Doing an activity after our reading helps us to monitor our comprehension and gain a deeper understanding of the story.
Three Quick Things to Know-
1. When reading a fiction story, you can stop to think about what you are reading to be sure that you are understanding it.
2. Reading aloud to someone else,or listening to a story being read to me can help me become a better reader!
3. When you finish reading, you can write about what you read to help you better understand the story.
Tasks-Read a fiction book of your choice at home. If you are in the middle of a chapter book, please feel free to read a few pages/chapters of this book. If you have a favorite picture book/books at home, please read some of those. Try reading your book aloud to someone at home! If you don’t have a book at home, or if you want to find something new to read, visit “Book Flix” online. The web address and login information to access “Book Flix” can be found below. Please explore and find what you like, and read as many books as you want! When you have finished reading for today, please choose at least 1 activity from the “Fiction Reading Response Menu” (PDF found below) to complete. If you have time and you would like to complete more than 1 activity, please feel free to do so! You may complete the activity on a piece of scrap paper.
Materials/Activities- You will need a book from your house, or you will need your iPad, laptop, or tablet to access Book Flix.

Writing Day 10:
Overview – Personal Narrative Writing
Estimated Time – 25 minutes
Explanation – In class, we have written a personal narrative and know that a personal narrative is a story about a personal experience.
Three Quick Things to Know -
1. A personal narrative is written in first person. Since it’s your story, you need to use “I” as you tell your story.
2. By including vivid imagery and lots of sensory details you can make your reader feel like they are experiencing the event with you!
3. Good personal narratives include dialogue and include emotion.
Tasks: Using notebook paper or a computer, select a personal narrative topic to write about. You will use the Work on Writing Personal Narrative Menu to select your topic. Select one menu choice and follow the directions given. When you are finished make sure to draw a picture to go with your writing.

Math Day 10:
Overview: Improper Fraction and Mixed Numbers
Estimated Time: 30 minutes
Explanation: We have previously learned how to convert fractions to mixed numbers and mixed numbers to fractions.
Three quick things to know:
1. To convert a fraction to a mixed number, the fraction must be improper. Improper fractions are when the numerator is larger than the denominator.
2. A mixed number is a whole number put together with a fraction. Example: 2 34
3. To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction, first multiply your denominator times the whole number. For example, 2x4, which equals 8. Then add that product, 8, to your numerator. So, 8+3=11. Finally, carry your denominator over! Your improper fraction is now 11/8.

Once you are finished, please click on the PDF titled, “Division Fact Practice.” You do not need to time yourself for this fact check, but you can if you would like! Once you are finished, check your answers with the answer key provided. Please place both worksheets in your “Finished Work” folder when completed.

Science Day 10:
Overview- States of Matter
Estimated Time- 20 minutes
Explanation- In class, we learned about the three states of matter, solid, liquid, and gas. To figure out if an object was a solid, liquid, or gas we had to determine its properties. Reading about and exploring different objects helped us understand the different states of matter around us.
Three Quick Things to Know-
1. Matter is found in everything around us. Matter is considered anything that takes up space and has a mass.
2. Remember the mass of an object does not change when it changes shape. (Example: clay ball and clay snake)
3. A solid has a definite shape and does not flow. A liquid does not have a definite shape and takes the shape of its container. Lastly, a gas does not have a definite shape or volume.
Tasks- Watch the “States of Matter” video on Science Flix to help remind you of the states of matter. Listen for key words and properties to look for in each state of matter. After listening to the video, explore the page and either read an article related to matter that interests you, found under “Explore More” or take the matter quiz, which can be found under “Show What You Know” tab. The web address and login information to access “Science Flix” can be found below. It is the same as our Reading. If you have extra time, you can explore other areas on the matter page like the Science Lab.
