• Hello 5th and 6th grade friends! Welcome to Miss Duncan's Distance Learning page. On this page, everyday you will see instructions and directions for assignments that should be completed. If you are in my room for any of these subjects, please follow the assignments listed on this page for that subject. If you are NOT in my room for any of these subjects, please follow the assignments posted for that subject of your homeroom teacher.

    Thursday, April 2nd, 2020 - Day 11

     

    5th Grade Math

    Overview: Review and Real-World Problems

    Estimated Time: Approximately 30 minutes

    Explanation of Activity/Assignment: Today you will review review the topics that were addressed over the past few days and create 6 word problems to go along with these topics.

    Quick things to know: 

    • You may go back and reference any of the lesson plans from previous days.
    • Please visit https://www.cbsd.org/Page/1511 to access tutorial videos related to accessing online Math in Focus resources.
    • If you do not have the supplied worksheets for this day, it is fine to create your own based off the supplied worksheets. 

    Tasks: 

    • Review Worksheet:

    • Word Problem Worksheet:
      • Complete the Real-Word Problem Worksheet

    How is this assignment turned in to the teacher?  You can either take a picture or scan your workseets and email them to me at eduncan@cbsd.org. If this option is not available to you, please hold on to your worksheets until we return to school. For each assignment completed you will earn $5 (class money) when we return to school.

     

    5th Grade Reading

    Overview: Book study of "My Life as a Book", by Janet Tashjian

    Estimated Time: Approximately 45 minutes. 

    Explanation of Activity/Assignment: Today you will continue reading the book, "My Life as a Book". Before reading you will define some key vocabulary that is in the book.  

    Quick things to know:

    • You can define the vocabulary words on a page in your tan workbook that was put in your green folder or type them on a computer.
    • When defining the vocabulary terms, you may use the internet or a dictonary to help you. 

    Tasks:

    • Before reading the book, define the vocabulary terms that are found in the first chapters of the book. Feel free to use a dictionary or the internet.
      • The vocabulary words you need to define are: cargo, century, glare, tournament, floral, fateful, patience (7 total)
      • Next, read the next chapters of the book titled "Grandma" and "Martha's Vinyard" (read up to page 155)

    How is this assignment turned in to the teacher? You can either take a picture or scan your work and email it to me at eduncan@cbsd.org. If this option is not available to you please hold on to your writing until we return to school. For each assignment completed you will receive $5 (class money) when we return to school.

     

    5th Grade Writing 

    Overview: Friendly Letter

    Estimated Time: Approximately 25 minutes

    Explanation of Activity/Assignments: You will write a freindly letter (or email) to a previous teacher. 

    Quick things to know:

    • The most important things that a letter includes are "Dear______" at the beginning and "From (your name)" at the end.
    • You can write this friendly letter in your tan workbook, you can type it on a computer, or you can email it. 
    • You DO NOT have to actually send your letter if you do not want to, that is completely up to you:)
    • You letter should be at least one paragraph long (4-5 sentences).

    Tasks: 

    • Write a friendly letter to a previous teacher
    • This letter can include whatever you like. 
    • Some helpful things to write about are:
      • How your distance learning is going
      • What you are doing at home
      • Your plans for the summer
      • And MORE!

    6th Grade Reading

    Overview: Novel study of "Hoot" by Carl Hiaasen

    Estimated Time: Approximately 45 minutes. 

    Explanation of Activity/Assignments: Today you will continue reading the novel, "Hoot". After reading you will complete a reading pages in your novel study packet that relate to the first chapters.

    Quick things to know: 

    • The novel study packet is in your green folder.

    Tasks:

    • Before reading, complete page 20 in your novel study packet titled, "Dictionary Detective!: Chapters 13 - 15"
    • Read chapter 13 of "Hoot", by Carl Hiaasen
    • After reading, complete page 21 in your novel study packet titled, "Vocabulary Study: Chapters 13 - 15" .
