If you are in my room for any of these subjects, please follow the assignments listed on this page for that subject. If you are NOT in my room for any of these subjects, please follow the assignments posted for that subject of your homeroom teacher.

    Monday, March 30th, 2020 - Day 8

     

    5th Grade Math

    Overview: Adding and Subtracting Decimals  

    Estimated Time: Approximately 30 minutes

    Explanation of Activity/Assignment: Today you will review Adding and Subtracting Decimals. Then you will play Decimal Victory to practice decimal comparisons.

    Quick things to know: 

    • When adding and subtracting decimals, remember to line decimals, which will line up your place values. 
    • To review Adding and Subtracting Decimals, please reference Ed: Your Friend in Learning online, or your workbook pages in Chapter 4.
    • Please visit https://www.cbsd.org/Page/1511 to access tutorial videos related to accessing online Math in Focus resources.
    • There are no pre-made worksheets for today. 

    Tasks: 

    • Self-made Questions:
      • Shuffle your set of number cards.
      • Flip over 3 cards and place them in front of you in a horzontal line. Flip over 3 more cards and place these under each of the first 3. Add a decimal point to each number either after the first or second digit.
      • On a separate piece of paper, add AND subtract the decimal numbers you created.
      • Repeat 3 times. You will have 6 problems on your paper.
    • Decimal Detective:
      • Locate 8 ways that decimals are used arounf your house. Share with someone else at least three of those ways. As a follow up question, "How do decimals (particularly the adding and subtracting of decimals) impact our daily lives?"
        • You do not need to write this answer down, please just discuss.
    • Extra: Only do this activity if you want more practice. 
      • Play "Maze: Four Operations of Decimals" on Ed: Your Friend in Learning
      • Decimal Victory Game:
        • Shuffle your set of number cards.
        • Flip over 4 cards and place them in front of you in a horizontal line. 
        • Add a decimal marker between two of the digits to make a number with a decimal. 
        • Considering the remaining digits in the pile, make 1 number that would be larger than the number in front of you. (Add the decimal numbers on a separate sheet)
        • Considering the remaining digits in the pile, make 1 number that would be smaller than the number in front of you. (Add and Subtract the decimal numbers on a separate sheet)

    How is this assignment turned in to the teacher?  You can either take a picture or scan your workseets and email them to me at eduncan@cbsd.org. If this option is not available to you, please hold on to your worksheets until we return to school. For each assignment completed you will earn $5 (class money) when we return to school.

     

    5th Grade Reading

    Overview: Book study of "My Life as a Book", by Janet Tashjian

    Estimated Time: Approximately 45 minutes. 

    Explanation of Activity/Assignment: Today you will continue reading the book, "My Life as a Book". Before reading you will define some key vocabulary that is in the book. After reading you will answer some comprehension questions about what you read 

    Quick things to know:

    • You can define the vocabulary words on a page in your tan workbook that was put in your green folder or type them on a computer.
    • When defining the vocabulary terms, you may use the internet or a dictonary to help you. 
    • When answering your comprehension questions you may write in your tan workbook or type them on a computer.

    Tasks:

    • Before reading the book, define the vocabulary terms that are found in the first chapters of the book. Feel free to use a dictionary or the internet.
      • The vocabulary words you need to define are: exaggerating, weaves, coax, insist, colleague, hybrid, intricate, canister, monumental, (9 total)
      • Next, read the next chapters of the book titled A Different James Bond, and A Call From Matt (read up to page 116)
      • After reading, the following questions. (Remember, your responses should be at least 3 sentences long) 
    1. At the begining of the story, Derek did not like Carly at all. How has his opinion of Carly changed since the begining of the story? How do you know?
    2. How is Derek feeling after getting the call from Matt? Describe his emotions.

    5th Grade Writing 

    Overview: Research and Notetaking

    Estimated Time: Approximately 25 minutes

    Explanation of Activity/Assignments: You are going to research the year that you were born and the current year (2019 - 2020), looking for similarities and differnces. 

    Quick things to know:

    • Today you are going to focus your research on the current year (2019 - 2020).
    • Look for similar facts to what your found yesterdat about your birth year (Example: if you searched for popular celebrities in your birth year, search for popular celebrities in the year 2019 - 2020 - it's ok if you cant find every fact)

    Tasks: 

    • Use the ineternet to find as many interesting facts as possible.
    • You can ask family members to get information as well. 
    • You can take your notes in your tan workbook or you can type them - just make sure you hold on to them for next week!!!

    How is this assignment turned in to the teacher?  You can either take a picture or scan your writing and email it to me at eduncan@cbsd.org. If this option is not available to you please hold on to your writing until we return to school. For each assignment completed you will receive $5 (class money) when we return to school.

     

    6th Grade Reading

    Overview: Novel study of "Hoot" by Carl Hiaasen

    Estimated Time: Approximately 45 minutes. 

    Explanation of Activity/Assignments: Today you will continue reading the novel, "Hoot". Before reading you will complete a vocabulary worksheet in your novel study packet that will help you while you read. After reading you will complete a reading page in your novel study packet that relates to the vocabulary in the first chapters.

    Quick things to know: 

    • The novel study packet is in your green folder.

    Tasks:

    • Before reading, complete page 16 your novel study packet titled, "Dictionary Detective!: Chapters 10 - 12"
    • Read chapter 10 of "Hoot", by Carl Hiaasen
    • After reading, complete page 17 in your novel study packet titled, "Vocabulary Study: Chapters 10 - 12"
