• MARCH 24, 2020 - LESSON PLANS

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR DISTANCE LEARNING:

    1.  All Special Class lessons can be found by visiting the Butler Homepage.

    • There is a LINK in the NEWS FROM BUTLER section titled: Specialist Distance Learning Links.
    • Please note:  Your child can CHOOSE what special they would like to complete on any given day for 20 minutes.  
      • Monday - Gym
      • Tuesday - Art
      • Wednesday - QUEST
      • Thursday - Library
      • Friday - Music

    2. Distance Learning WILL BE reinforcing secure skills.  I will NOT be introducing new concepts.

    3. Students are NOT graded and/or penalized if assignments are not completed.

    4.  Feedback WILL BE given. Suggested ways to receive feedback are:  Email Me OR use Seesaw to share photos, videos, and/or any messages. 

    5. I will be relying on Seesaw to help us stay connected.  I will be posting videos DAILY to say hello and to share other important information.

    MATH - DAY #5

    Overview:  Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers

    Estimated Time: Approximately 30 minutes

    Explanation:   Today you will review how to subtract fractions and mixed numbers.  You will also have time to play a fraction drawing game. 

    Things to know:

    • To review Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers, please reference Ed: Your Friend in Learning online, or your workbook pages 139-152 (Chapter 2).
      • To find your workbook pages go to ED YOUR FRIEND IN LEARNING App 
      • In your child's RED DISTANCE LEARNING Folder is a flyer titled "Parent Information - Home Access for Technology" with specific instructions how to access this app and others from home.
    • Please visit https://www.cbsd.org/Page/1511 to access tutorial videos related to accessing online Math in Focus resources.
    • If you do not have the supplied worksheets for this day, it is fine to create your own based off the supplied worksheets.

    Tasks:

    1. Complete the Math Packet that is in your Red Distance Learning Folder for Tuesday - Week 3 (Week 3 can be found in the bottom right-hand corner)  
      • Please check your answers using the Answer Key packet. 
      • OPTIONAL:  Complete the questions for Friday and/or the Challenge Problem throughout the week.  
    2. Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers worksheet:
      • Complete the Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers Worksheet
        • Go onto Seesaw-Click the Activity Tab to complete this worksheet.
    3. Play “Fraction Sketch”
      • One player chooses a fraction or mixed number (you could also use your number cards to create fractions or mixed numbers).
      • Draw a picture which showcases that fraction or mixed number. As a challenge, try to not simply; use polygons such as a circle, rectangle, square, triangle, etc...  
      • The second player tries to guess both what you are drawing as well as the fraction or mixed number you are representing.
      • Consider taking pictures or your drawings, if possible, to share with your teacher.
      • If there is only one player, simply choose or create a fraction and draw it. Then, consider taking a picture of your drawing, if possible.
    4. Optional Activity: Play “Pete the Plumber: Fractions and Mixed Numbers” on Ed: Your Friend in Learning

    • At the END of the week (THURSDAY) you will go onto TEAMS and complete a Math Reflection Sheet and answer the following three questions.
      1. Name TWO things you learned this week.
      2. Name ONE GLOW for the week.
      3. Name ONE GROW for the week.  

    READING - DAY #5

    Overview:  Read Aloud-The Honest Truth / Night of the Twisters / Independent Reading Time

    Estimated Time: Approximately 45 minutes

    Explanation:  Today you will be listening to the book The Honest Truth and continue with the book Night of the Twisters by Ivy Ruckman.

    Things to know:

    • Use this link: Read Aloud - The Honest Truth to listen to Chapters 8 and 8.5 of The Honest Truth.
    • In your Red Distance Learning Folder, you will need the Night of the Twisters packet and book to complete today's tasks.

    Tasks:

    1. Listen to the book The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart
    2. In your Night of the Twisters packet, you will continue to complete packet pages 6-8 when a new setting and/or new characters are introduced.
    3. In the Night of the Twisters book read Nine O’clock pp. 51-60
    4. Complete Night of the Twisters packet p. 10 –Walking in Dan’s Shoes
      • Column 2: Explain the difficult decisions Dan makes during moments of crisis.
        • For example, The Warning Siren Sounded p. 46-48
          • Dan called his grandma and checked to see if his mom was back by looking out the window.
      • Column 3: Answer the questions: What would you have done and why?
    1. Optional: Choose a chapter book and read for 20-30 minutes.

    WRITING - DAY #5

    Overview:  Nouns / March Writing Prompts

    Estimated Time: Approximately 25 minutes

    Explanation:  Today you will be focusing on nouns along with continuing to complete any of the March Writing Prompts.

    Things to know:

    • The following vocabulary can be used while completing the tasks for today.
      • Nouns: names any person, place, thing, or idea.

     Tasks:

    1. Complete Grammar Packet p. 9 and 10
      • Use Grammar Packet in RED Distance Learning Folder
      • Follow the directions on each page to complete the task for uses of nouns.
    2. Choose ONE March Writing Prompt and respond to the question asked.
      • The March Writing Prompts can be found on Seesaw
        • Go onto Seesaw-click the Activity Tab to see the March Writing Prompts
      • You can respond in the following ways:
        • Write your response in a notebook that you have at home.
        • Word document on TEAMS

    • At the END of the week (THURSDAY), you will pick at least ONE of your March Writing Prompt written responses to share with me either on SEESAW or you can type up one of your prompts using the WORD DOCUMENT I created for you on TEAMS.

    SCIENCE - DAY #5

    Overview:  Day 3 of 3 - Design a Chain Reaction Invention. 

    Estimated Time: Approximately three 20-minute blocks of time

    Explanation:  Today is a continuation of yesterday.  It is meant to provide additional time to complete the project. 

    Things to know:

    • Invention – an original creation. An invention can be a thing, such as a machine, or a process, such as a new way of doing something.
    • Possible Invention Ideas Include – Keep a pet’s water bowl full, make buttered toast, turn off the water when the tub is full

    Tasks: Continue with yesterday’s work.

    1. Make a rough sketch/plan.
    2. Create an invention following the guidelines.
    3. Follow the guidelines sheet for the final project.
    4. Optional… make a short video and/or take a picture of your design for your invention and post it to Seesaw.

    • Today (Day 3), take a picture of your “Chain Reaction Invention” and post it to your journal on Seesaw. Give a brief explanation of your invention.
