Quick Things to Know:
Definitions:
Simple sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and no dependent clauses.
Compound sentence: A sentence with multiple independent clauses but no dependent clauses.
Complex sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
Compound-complex sentence: A sentence with multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
Tasks:
- Journal (10 minutes): continue your journal entry writing from last week. Set a timer for 10 minutes and try to write for the entire time.
- Review again (6 minutes): Brain research suggests that we need to look at something many, many times (15-18 times) before it stays in our long-term memory. So, there is value in RE-visiting material. Send 6-8 minutes looking over the powerpoint slides. Take note of the following:
- Know the difference between dependent and independent clauses
- Examine the mentor sentences from YA novels
- Know the definition of each sentence type
- Quizizz Review (10 minutes): As you continue to master sentence types, play this Quizizz Review (Links to an external site.) until you feel confident in your ability to distinguish between the 4 types of sentences.

Explanation of Activity/Assignment:
I can engage in a virtual author visit.
I can record interesting facts and lessons from the author that I can apply in and out of the classroom to further enhance my writing.
Quick Things to Know:
Joelle Charbonneau is a YA author best known for her dystopian trilogy, The Testing.
Tasks:
- Engage in a virtual author visit with YA author Joelle Charbonneau via Microsoft Teams at 11:00am (link on CANVAS).
- Prior to the visit, explore the author's website to learn more about the author.
- During the visit, please take some notes about anything you find interesting about the author, her books, and the writing process (i.e. how did she start writing? Does she discuss any writing tips and tricks? Why does she write? etc.).
- After the virtual visit, please take part in a quick reflection (link on CANVAS).
