    Overview: Grammar: sentence types 

    Estimated Time: 30 minutes

    Explanation of Activity/Assignment:

    I can review notes on sentence types

    I can identify the four types of sentences: simple, compound, complex, compound-complex

    I can use proper punctuation to control the flow of my sentences

    I can write the four sentence types

    Quick Things to Know:

    Definitions:

    Simple sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and no dependent clauses.

    Compound sentence: A sentence with multiple independent clauses but no dependent clauses.

    Complex sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

    Compound-complex sentence: A sentence with multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

    Tasks:

    1. Journal: continue your journal entry writing from last week. Set a timer for 8 minutes and try to write for the entire time. 
    2. Read the poster that illustrates the purpose of using a variety of sentences in our writing. Appreciate the way cleverness of this example.
    3. Watch the video on sentence types. If you have notes with you in your binder, have those out as you watch the video.  If you don’t have notes already written, we recommend writing some notes as you watch. 
    4. Use the discussion page below to quiz your friend.  Write a sentence (you pick: simple, compound, or complex).   Make sure you use proper punctuation and capitalization.  Then, correctly identify a type of sentence written by a friend. (directions found on Canvas)

    Overview: Book Club 

    Estimated Time: 30 minutes

    Explanation of Activity/Assignment:

    I can engage in sustained silent reading. 

    I can record and be accountable for my daily reading.

    I can monitor my comprehension of the story as I read.

    I can identify main characters, inciting incident, and key conflicts.

    Quick Things to Know:

    Materials --> Self-Selected Book. 

    Use a bookmark in your novel to keep your place.

    Find a place where you can concentrate (one free of distraction). 

    Tasks:

    • Read your Self-Selected Book Club novel for 30 minutes. Don't take your cell phone or laptop with you.  Allow yourself to become immersed in the world of the characters; find your reading stride.   
    • If you like to use post-it notes to record a few (not 20 or 30 but 2 or 3) observations, feel free to do so.  However, this reading should be enjoyable and stress free. 
    • Fill in your new reading log found on OneNote in your Book Club folder titled "Reading Log"
    • Complete the Exit Ticket found on Canvas.
