    Overview

     Students are determining what background knowledge they have about historical fiction.

    Explanation of Activity/ Assignment

     Students will complete Day 1 Activities for Historical Fiction Book: Glory Be.  Identify elements of this genre and build background knowledge to support reading and comprehension of text.

    Quick things to know

     

    Historical fiction is written about real events and details in history but that the author has written it in a fictional way.

    Historical fiction has 3 main parts: setting, characters, events.

    The difference between the Fiction and Historical Fiction is that Historical Fiction is based on a historical event or place.

    Task

     

    You will use Glory Be Power Point to complete these activities. Click Glory Be 

    Complete ONLY Day 1. ( Slides 1-8.) Look at each speech bubble. Decide if each specch bubble is Historical Fiction or not.

    1. Listen to  the picture book “Freedom Summer”.  This takes place in 1964  around the time that Martin Luther King, Jr was fighting for everyone to have equal rights.
    2. KWL Chart click here (slide 6 in power point) ( 4 options to complete) fill in the first column “What I Already Know About this Time Period”.
    3. Save to onedrive and use again after watching the Brainpop video.
    • Complete the Chart Directly in Seesaw ( Log in to Seesaw, click on Activities, Click on Class Activities, choose Glory Be KWL Chart)
    • Make your own chart on a piece of paper, take a picture and post to Seesaw when complete.
    • Make your own Chart in Microsoft Word and print, take a picture and post to Seesaw when complete.
    • Make your own Chart in Microsoft Word in your Office 365 and Share with Ms. Cohen
    • Watch the Brain Pop to gather more information about the time period. Go back to the graphic organizer on slide 6 in power point  and fill in the middle column, “What I Learned from a Nonfiction source” on your own KWL organizer ( whatever option you chose from #3 above.)

    5. Read the Author’s note about “Freedom Summer”. Go back to the graphic organizer on slide 6 in the power point to fill in the last column, “What I Learned from the Author’s Note”.  ( whatever option you chose from #3 above.) 

    When you finish the KWL take a picture and post to seesaw or email it to me.

    Place Value: Identifying Numbers

    You have learned how to work with large numbers. You can show numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word form. You can determine the values of digits based on their place value.

    2. If you cannot print activities, you may write the answers on a sheet of paper.

    3. Standard form is 653,521

    4. Expanded form is 600,000 + 50,000 + 3,000 + 500 + 20 + 1

    5. Word form is six hundred fifty three thousand, five hundred twenty one

    6. Please look at Student Workbook Chapter 1 pages 11-13 and 19-21 if you need guidance.

    1. Complete the sheet called Gr 4 Day 1 Place Value. If you are not sure how to answer a question, write a question mark. (?)

    2. Log into Ed and open the Fact Fluency for Chapter 1. Complete activity 1A and 1B: Adding Numbers without Regrouping.

    3. Play a game: Use dice, number cards, or make up your own 5-digit numbers. Each partner creates a 5-digit number with cards and writes it in expanded form. Partner A shows Partner B the number (in expanded form) and Partner B writes the number in standard form. Partners switch. The partner with the larger number gets a point.
