    Our special today is Quest

     

    Reading Activities for Day 1

    Total estimated time: 65 minutes

     Independent Reading – 20 minutes

    Students are expected to read a self-selected text for a 20-minute block to continue to build on reading stamina, fluency, and comprehension. Students should read from a self-selected text, library book, or digital resource.

     Problem and Solution – 45 minutes

    Step 1: In your Friends Anthology read pages 16-19 about children’s author, Marc Brown

    Step 2: Read Arthur’s Pet Business on pages 20-50. As you read, think about “What is the problem for the main character” and “How is that problem solved?”

    Step 3: In your packet, take out the graphic organizer entitled “Problem and Solution”.

    Step 4: Draw and color a picture of the problem and solution in the story.

    Step 5: Write the problem and solution below your illustrations.

     

    WTW Activities for Day 1- Sort 25

    Estimated Time: Approximately 30 minutes

     

    Activity 1:

    Overview: Reading, Writing, and Sorting words with r-influenced Vowel Patterns -er, -ear, -eer, and -ear=ur

     

    Explanation:  Read, sort , and spell words with r-influenced Vowel Patterns -er, -ear, -eer, and -ear=ur

    /er/ sound spelled er like in her and spelled ear like in earn

    /ēr/ sound spelled -ear or -eer like in hear and deer

     

    Things to know:

    • Sit with mom, dad, grandparent or guardian, or a brother or sister to practice your poem Arctic Fox.
    • Use page 34 and 35 in your WTW book found in your BEAR Binder.
    • Specific directions are provided on the WTW page 34 in your BEAR Binder.

     

    Tasks:

    1. Read aloud the poem on page 34 three times.
    2. Follow the directions on page 34 and complete the page.
    3. Read the words on the top of page 35. Copy the words on the handout in the WTW packet that is in the manilla folder.
    4. Write each word neatly in a rectangle. Speak, spell, and write as you do this task.
    5. Listen carefully to the sounds and pay close attention to the spelling pattern.

    How is this assignment turned in to the teacher: Completed pages stay in your BEAR Binder. You will need the handout you completed for Day 2 activities.

     

    Writing Activities  for Day 1

    Grade 2: Narrative Writing

    Estimated time: 45 minutes

    Step 1: Read the Prompt

    Imagine waking up on a weekday morning, the ground is covered with white and it is still snowing heavily. THERE IS NO SCHOOL TODAY! What one thing would you love to do in the snow on a day off from school? In your writing help your teacher picture what you would do on your “snow day”. 

    There are so many things that are fun to do in the snow. Among all those special activities, choose one to write about.

    Step 2: Pre-Write (Discussion Questions)

    • What did you do on your snow day?
    • Where were you?
    • Was anyone with you?
    • What happened?
    • What did you look like, and how did you feel?

    Step 3: Pre-Write (Plan)

    Use the Beginning, Middle, and End organizer in your writing packet found in your manilla folder.

    • Sketch your ideas
    • Plan your story (beginning, middle, end)

    Step 4: Write your draft in the composition book provided in your manilla folder. Think about the following suggestions as you write:

    • Make sure your story has a beginning, middle and end.

    Try to use a bold beginning.

    • Write your ideas in an order that makes sense. Use transition words. 

    Step 5: Reread and revise

    Make sure to check your conventions:

    o Capitalization

    o Spelling

    o Punctuation

    Step 6: Draw and color a picture to go with your story!

     

    Math Activities for Day 1

    Grade 2, Day 1 Math: Practice Counting to 1, 000

    Estimated Time for 4 Activities: Approximately 45 minutes

    Activity 1:

    Overview: Practice counting-up from 100 to 1, 000 by ones.

     Explanation: Count on by ones from 100 up to 1, 000.

     Things to know:

    1. Sit with mom, dad, grandparent or guardian, or your brother or sister to practice counting to 1, 000.
    2. Worksheets are attached or it is fine to use paper and pencil.
    3. More specific directions are provided on each sheet/activity that goes along with these lessons.

    Tasks:

    1. Practice counting-up from 100 to 1, 000 by ones.

    Activity 2:

    Overview: Practice counting-up from 100 to 1, 000 by tens.

     Explanation: Count on by tens from 100 up to 1, 000.

     Things to know:

    1. Sit with mom, dad, grandparent or guardian, or your brother or sister to practice counting to 1, 000.
    2. Worksheets are attached or it is fine to use paper and pencil.
    3. More specific directions are provided on each sheet/activity that goes along with these lessons.

    Tasks:

    1. Draw base ten blocks to represent numbers from 100 to 1, 000 counting by tens.
    2. Write the numbers to match the base ten blocks you drew.
    3. Do this  three times.

    Activity 3:

    Overview: Practice counting-up from 100 to 1, 000 by hundreds.

     Explanation: Count on by hundreds from 100 up to 1, 000.

     Things to know:

    1. Sit with mom, dad, grandparent or guardian, or your brother or sister to practice counting to 1, 000.
    2. Worksheets are attached or it is fine to use paper and pencil.
    3. More specific directions are provided on each sheet/activity that goes along with these lessons.

    Tasks:

    1. Draw base ten blocks to represent  numbers from 100 to 1, 000 counting by hundreds.
    2. Write the numbers to match the given base ten blocks you drew.
    3. Do this three times.

    Activity 4:

    Overview: Use place value to read, write, and represent numbers to 1, 000 using standard, expanded, and word form.

     Explanation: You will read and write numbers up to 1, 000 in standard, expanded, and word form.

    Things to know:

    1. Sit with mom, dad, grandparent or guardian, or your brother or sister to practice reading and writing numbers up to 1, 000 in standard, expanded, and word form. Examples are provided for you on the sheets attached.
    2. Examples: 563

    Standard form: 563

    Expanded form: 500+60+3

    Word Form: Five hundred and sixty-three

    1. Worksheets are attached or it is fine to use paper and pencil.
    2. More specific directions are provided on each sheet/activity that goes along with these lessons.

    Tasks:

    1. Write each given number in standard, expanded, and word form.
    2. Play a game to write a number in standard, expanded, and word form.

     

    Science / Social Studies Activities for Day 1

    Estimated time: 30 minutes

    Grade 2: Scholastic News - "Look Both Ways, Elephants!"

    Things to Know: 

    1. Sit with mom, dad, grandparent or guardian, or a brother or sister to read/ listen to the article and complete worksheets.

    Enter your classroom password: butler2

    Click on the assigned article to listen to it. You can also watch the video, learn the vocabulary, and play the game.

    *If you do not have access to the website, just use your paper article to complete the lesson below!

    Tasks:

    1. Listen or read the article "Look Both Ways, Elephants!"  Stop after each subtitle and answer questions 1-4 from "Read and Think" page in your packet. Please be sure to answer in complete sentences.
    2. After you listen/ read the article complete "Reading Checkpoint" in your packet.
