    Day 3 - March 19, 2020

    Reading:

    Overview- Non-fiction Reading

    Estimated Time- 45-60 minutes

    Explanation- In class, we have learned to use non-fiction text features to understand a text.  While you are reading, take notice of the headings, photographs, bold words, and captions.  Think about things you are wondering or curious about while you are reading.  Students spend time in class and at home reading independent books of their choice.  

    Three Quick Things to Know- 

    1. A caption is a text box that appears under a photograph to explain the photograph.

    2. A bold word is an important word in the text.  This vocabulary word will usually be defined in a Glossary, or in National Geographic, the "Word Wise" box.

    3. Good readers ask themselves questions while they are reading.  They also make connections to previously known material.  Take note of these while you are reading.

    Tasks- Take the included National Geographic from your Grab Bag, and read the third article.  As you read the article, complete the last "Non-Fiction Read & Respond" page for the article you have chosen.  When the response page is completed, please put it in your "Completed Work" folder to turn in when you return to school.  When you have finished reading your National Geographic article, please read an independent book of your choice for the remaining time.  Take note of 2 interesting, unknown, or unique words while you read and write them in your personal dictionary. If you do not have your personal dictionary, use a sticky note or a scrap piece of paper. 

    Materials/Activities- You will need the National Geographic magazine and the "Non-Fiction Read & Respond" to complete this.  You will also need an independent reading book of your choice and your personal words dictionary.

     

    Writing:

    Overview- Spelling, Grammar, & Informative Writing  

    Estimated Time- 60 minutes 

    Explanation- In class, we practice the weekly spelling list and spelling skill. We also regularly practice editing our writing (checking for correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, etc.).  Students have been researching informative writing topics of their choice in class.  Students have used iPads and laptops to find this information. 

    Three Quick Things to Know-  

    1. Using our weekly spelling pattern can help us be sure that words are spelled correctly. 

    2. When editing a sentence, there should be a capital letter at the beginning and correct punctuation at the end. 

    3. Using library research resources can help us find relevant information to include in our informative writing pieces.

    Tasks- Using spelling list 25,  please choose one activity from the “Word Work Menu” choice board to complete.  This can be done either in your spelling book or on a scrap piece of paper.  Spelling should take about 10-15 minutes.  Use the "Daily Language Review" Grammar packet and complete the second page (labeled Friday 1).  Grammar should take about 10 minutes. Using your chosen informative topic from yesterday, please continue your research each of your headings, making sure you have at least five facts for each. If you do not have at least five facts for each heading, go back and find more research to support that heading.  If you have time remaining, use the fourth research column, to come up with another heading.  Find at least five pieces of information to support your fourth heading.

    Math:

    Overview- Addition with regrouping & Division practice 

    Estimated Time- 60 minutes 

    Explanation- At the beginning of the year, students learned how to add multi-digit numbers with regrouping (carrying numbers to the next place value).  Students also learned how to divide two and three-digit dividends by a 1-digit divisor with no remainders.  We have practiced both skills throughout the year with our Calendar Math routines as well. 

    Three Quick Things to Know- 

    1. When you add a multi-digit number, if the sum is more than 9 for one place value, carry it to the next place value and add it there.

    2. When you divide numbers, think about how many times the divisor goes into the dividend.

    3. If you get a remainder today, check your work.  The worksheet you are working on has no remainders!  

    Tasks- Review how to add multi-digit numbers with regrouping by completing both sides of the “Addition with Regrouping” worksheet in the review packet.  Then, in the multiplication and division packet, complete the page that says “Division: Two-digit and Three-digit Dividends, No Remainders”.  Then, log in to a computer or ipad and play Addition Snake: https://www.mathplayground.com/addition_snake.html

    Social Studies:

    Overview- Regions of the United States 

    Estimated Time- 45 minutes 

    Explanation- In class, the first region we visited was the Northeast region of the United States.  We visited many of the states in this region on our train tour, and learned about the history, important sites, and key locations here. 

    Three Quick Things to Know-  

    1. The states in the Northeast are: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland 

    2. Washington, D.C. (Our Nation’s Capital) is also in the Northeast 

    3. Canada borders part of the Northeast region, and the Atlantic Ocean is somewhat to the South of the Northeast region. 

    Tasks- Use the “50 States Acrostic Poems” booklet and choose 2-3 states from the Northeast to write a poem about.  Please do your best to complete the whole poem, however if you are missing a few letters that is completely fine!  To help you with this, think about adjectives you would use to describe the state, bodies of water that are near or in the state, mountains in the state, cities/towns in the state, important food, plants, or animals in the state, and the history of the state.

    Technology/Free Choice:

    Estimated Time- 30 minutes

    Tasks- Students may choose to go on Freckle math or EPIC! reading.  Please refer to the Grab Bag instruction sheet for information on how to log on to/access these accounts. Students can also use the Fact Fluency choice board to play a multiplication/division game or practice their fact fluency using one of the options on the board.  Students may also choose to free write or read an independent book of their choice. 

    Materials/Activities- Students will need a phone, tablet, laptop or computer to access EPIC! or Freckle.
