    Good morning, 2nd grade!  Today is Thursday, March 19.  Happy First Day of Spring!  Today's special is Art, so refer to Gayman's Distance Learning page for specific activities for today's special.

    Grade 2, Day 3 Math: Adding and Subtracting Fluently Within 1,000

    Estimated Time for 3 Activities: Approximately 45 minutes

    Activity 1-2:

    Overview: Add and subtract numbers within 1,000 (one, two and three-digit addition).

    Explanation:  You will add and subtract within 1,000 without regrouping

    Things to know:

    1. Sit with someone at home to practice adding fluently within 1,000.
    2. Activities for the day’s lessons are included in the math packet that was sent home.
    3. More specific directions are provided on each sheet/activity that goes along with these lessons.

    Tasks:

    1. Add and subtract within 1,000 without regrouping (p. 16 in packet)
    2. Read word problems to add and solve (p. 17-19 in packet)

    Activity 3:

    Overview: Fact Fluency

    Explanation:  You will practice your math facts

    Things to know:

    1. Sit with someone at home to practice adding fluently within 1,000.
    2. If you do not have the supplied worksheets or access to any of the worksheets, it is fine to create your own based off the supplied worksheets.
    3. More specific directions are provided on each sheet/activity that goes along with these lessons.

    Tasks:

    1. Fact Fluency Practice (addition and subtraction) (p. 20-21 in packet)

    How to turn in these assignments:  Please keep the packet in the yellow folder to be returned when we come back to school.

    Grade 2, Day 3 Reading/Phonics

    Estimated time for 3 activities:  Approximately 45 minutes

    Phonics

    Overview:  Review the -ir spelling pattern (15 minutes)

    Explanation:  You will review the -ir spelling pattern with someone at home and choose an activity for additional word work practice.

    Things to know: 

    1. Sit with someone at home.
    2. You can do this activity in a variety of ways (out loud, paper and pencil, rainbow write etc.)
    3. Use the “This or That” worksheet that is in your yellow folder that was sent home.

    Tasks:

    1. Generate a list of words with the -ir spelling pattern (bird, dirt, etc.) OR choose an activity from the “This or That” worksheet that is in your yellow folder. Initial the box after you have completed the activity.
    2. Take a picture of your work and post it to Seesaw (using your NEW code or the messaging option).

    Reading

    Overview:  Build your reading stamina, demonstrate comprehension and practice reading with fluency and expression (30 minutes)

    Explanation:  You will be reading a fiction text aloud to a family member (including a pet).

    Things to Know:

    1. Choose TWO books that are fiction for today. You can use two books that you have at home or you can log-on to Epic! to choose.  You can also reread the two books that you read on Monday and Tuesday.
    2. Continue to use your green fluency book each day to build reading fluency.

    Tasks:

    1. Complete your one-minute fluency passage reading.
    2. Choose a family member and read TWO fiction stories out loud OR choose two of the options on the Epic! reading bingo page that is in your reading folder.
    3. Feel free to post a video of you reading your story on Seesaw.

    How to Turn in these Assignments:  Please save any papers with your work in your yellow folder. I will also respond to comments on Seesaw as they are posted.

    Grade 2, Day 3 Writing

    Overview:  Rewrite your “how-to” story as a good copy (30 minutes)

    Explanation of Activity/Assignment:  Second graders will rewrite the “how-to” rough draft writing piece as a good copy

    Things to know:

    1. Sit with someone at home and reread your writing.
    2. Make any final changes and rewrite you story.

    Tasks:

    1. Reread your “how-to” story to someone at home. If needed, make any final changes to your story.
    2. Rewrite your good copy on the paper included in your yellow folder.
    3. Illustrate your writing with lots of colors.

    How to turn in this Assignment:  Keep the graphic organizer and good copy in your yellow folder.

    Grade 2, Day 3 Social Studies

    Overview:  Identify leaders in a community

    Explanations:  Students will identify community leaders (president, governor, mayor, principal)

    Things to Know:

    1. This can be completed with paper and pencil.

    Tasks:

    1. Sit with someone at home. Think of the different community leaders (president, governor, mayor, principal).  What is their job?  How can they help people in the community?
    2. Write a letter to one community leader about a concern you have AND a solution to help make the situation better OR write a card or a note to someone thanking them for what they do.

    How to Turn in this Assignment:  Save any completed work in your yellow folder.
