    Class: Food Science

Overview: Some of the skills we have learned about in Food Science include cooperation, communication, working with others, contributing to a larger group, teamwork, cleaning, etc.  You have also learned about careers in Food Science, some of which are restaurant owners, managers, etc. Pretend your entire home is a restaurant that you own. This week you will focus on helping your coworkers (guardians) to clean!  After all no-one wants to shop or eat at a restaurant that isn't clean. You will spend Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week showing your coworkers (family) how you can contribute. If your coworkers/parents would like to modify the assignment in some way, they may do so. For example, if the assignment is to sweep and mop your kitchen floor, but your parent has a different chore that they need done more (like to help them clean out the garage, for example) they can change the assignment per their needs.

    Estimated Time: 45 mins

Assignment: Wash the windows in your house

Things to know: You will need Windex or glass cleaner. Spray windows and wipe with a paper towel (check with your parents first to make sure they have enough to spare) or you can use a rag/wash cloth. If you do not have Windex or glass cleaner, you can skip cleaning the window class and clean all around the window, including the dust off the bottom of the windows using a wet rag. When you open a window and look at the bottom landing where the window closes, you will see where dust collects and wipe this down.

    Tasks:

    1)    Clean the windows in your house.

    2)    Go on Canvas to retrieve the assignment sheet to fill in. Submit to Canvas.

Things to know: You will need a computer/laptop or a handheld device (such as cell phone) with the Canvas app on it, and internet access.

    Tasks:

    1)    Bell Ringer – What is your favorite kind of cookie? Do you know how to make your favorite kind of cookie? Have you ever made cookies before?

    2)    View the “Cookie Types” PowerPoint on Canvas and take notes in the notes section of OneNote or on paper. You are not required to turn in your notes, just as you don’t typically turn them in when we have class in person. Just keep them handy so you can utilize your notes at a later time.

Choose an option: If at any point during this online course the student chooses to demonstrate their learning through a cooking activity, remember to practice kitchen safety and kitchen sanitation such as: Wash hands for at least 20 seconds, do not cross contaminate, cook foods to appropriate temperatures, never put out an electrical or grease fire with water – smother it or use baking soda, etc. Also, you must have your parent(s)/guardian(s) permission and supervision if you are choosing a cooking activity. If you do not have permission to cook or supervision, pick a different activity. Students are NOT required to cook at home for my online course. IF the student chooses to cook or prepare a meal, they do so with their parent/guardian's permission, instruction and supervision.

Choice 1 - After viewing the PowerPoint, think about a type of cookie you would like to make. If you have your parent’s permission and support, bake some cookies with your parent/guardian and teach them what you now know about the different types of cookies. Tell them which “type” of cookie it is you are baking.

    OR

Choice 2 - watch a video of how to bake the cookies that you would have liked to bake.

    3)    No need to turn in your notes. Keep them. Enjoy the cookies you made or the cookies you watched a video of being made!
