WRITING
Overview: Students will brainstorm, draft, and write to respond to an informational prompt.
Estimate Time: 25 minutes
Explanation of Activity: Write an informative piece describing an animal.
Quick Things to Know:
- You can respond to the journal prompting by following one of the steps below:
- Seesaw: If you would like to write it on Seesaw, click “informational writing prompt” and the “+ add response”. Finally, click the notepad labeled “note” and type away!
- Piece of paper: If you would like to use paper, take a photo of the paper using the camera button after finish writing it.
- Google Document: If you would like to write in a google document, link it by pressing the upload button after you finish writing it.
- Remember that informative writing tells facts about a topic. We can use transition words and phrases to make our writing interesting. The more details you can share the better!

- Pick an animal you know a lot of facts about.
- Brainstorm your facts about that animal on paper or Seesaw.

WRITING
Overview: Cards/Letters for Clover Meadows Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Adults
Estimate Time: 25 minutes
Explanation of Activity: Because of COVID-19, elderly people who live in nursing homes need to stay inside. They are not allowed to have visitors. They are feeling lonely. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could share some sunshine and smiles with them?
Quick Things to Know:
- A friendly, positive message can go a long way in making someone’s day. Colorful pictures make people smile.
Task:
- Create a card or letter or mini poster for the elderly to make them smile.
- Include 2-3 sentences with words of encouragement, a friendly quote, or a joke.
- Draw a picture of something that would brighten someone’s day.
- Take a picture of your artwork/letter and upload it to your SeeSaw page or email it to me. I will send it to the elderly at the nursing home!

- Make a list of all the interesting items in your bedroom using describing words (ex: soft, comfortable tan lounge chair, creamy white and midnight black blanket with swirls and circles on it).
- Brainstorm your ideas on paper or on Seesaw.
- Save your work on Seesaw or email me your brainstorming web.
- Bonus: Take a picture or video giving a tour of your bedroom. Post it or email it to me 😊

Task:
- Log onto your Seesaw account. When you log in, click the top left gray box and click the class, "19-20 Mrs. Johnson"
- Next, click on your activities folder.
- Look for “Informational Writing Prompt”.
- Tap “+ add response”
- Answer the follow writing prompt: “Explain a game that you know a lot about”. Make sure you only use facts (no opinions 😊). For example, “In the game UNO, you place a card with the same number or color on the deck on your turn”. Do not use a sentence, such as “UNO is my favorite game because I like when I put a Draw 2 card down on another player”.
- You can respond to the journal prompting by following one of the steps below:
- Seesaw: If you would like to write it on Seesaw, click the type button and type away! You can make your text box bigger or smaller by dragging the circles on the outside of the text box.
- Piece of paper: If you would like to use paper, take a photo of the paper using the camera button after finish writing it.
- Google Document: If you would like to write in a google document, link it by pressing the upload button after you finish writing it.
- Don’t forget to restate the question (topic sentence) when responding and include a concluding sentence 😊
