Day 1 - Reading
Overview: Be a REAL reader
Estimated Time: Approximately 40 minutes
Explanation:
We have been learning this year that real readers combine the author’s text with their deep reading thoughts.
Things to Know:
- REAL readers activate and add to their schema
- Make inferences, predictions, and connections
- Determine what is important make
- Visualize what is happening
- Ask questions before, during, and after reading
- Summarize/Reflect on what they’ve read
Tasks:
- Read a chapter or 2 from the book you are currently enjoying for independent reading.
- While you are reading, use the habits of a REAL reader
- Complete the Day 1 activity (or another from the list) from the Distance Learning: Reading Discussions in your folder
- OPTIONAL – work on completing a Book Celebration from the list in your folder
Turn in You Assignment:
You may either have a discussion with a family member or write about the topic in the journal in your folder.
Day 1 - Math
Overview: Place Value: Working with Numbers to 10,000
Estimated Time: Approximately 45 minutes
Explanation: You have learned how to work with large numbers. You can show
numbers with drawings of base 10 blocks and with digits. You can
also show numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word
form
Things to Know:
- For tutorials on how to access online Math in Focus resources using Ed Your Friend in Learning visit https://www.cbsd.org/Page/1511 (See Microsoft Student Log-in Directions in your folder)
- If you cannot print activities, you may write the answers on a sheet of paper (all papers you need should be in your folder)
- Standard form is 3,521
- Expanded form is 3,000 + 500 + 20 + 1
- Word form is three thousand five hundred twenty-one
- Please look at Student Workbook Chapter 1: pages 17-18 if you need guidance (on Ed Your Friend)
Tasks:
- Complete the sheets called Gr 3 Day 1 Place Value. If you are not sure how to answer a question, write a question mark. (?)
- Play Roll and Show. For directions see the game packet in your folder. If you don't have any dice, you can make up 4-digit numbers. When you play, draw the base 10 blocks for each number, and write the number in expanded form and word form.
- Optional: Practice your fast facts by doing Freckle or Pet Bingo (free iPad app).

Day 1 - Language Arts: Writing and Spelling
Overview:
- Students will complete pages 1 of their Spelling Verb Tense packet.
- Students will write in their new
Estimated Time: 25 minutes.
Explanation:
Spelling/ Grammar: Students will review spelling strategies and practice verb tenses.
Journal: Students will move through the steps of the writing process- planning, drafting, editing, and revising- to create a written piece.
Tasks:
Spelling Verb Tense packet: Students will complete pages 1.
- Read through the set of15 Spelling words
- Highlight or underline all past tense verbs.
- Explain what you notice about the future tense verbs to a family member.
Writing: Students will write in their new Journal.
- Read through the Distance Learning Writer’s Notebook Activity topics
- Select a given topic or create your own idea!
- Plan in your head or on a piece of planning paper.
- Write your piece for at least 10 – 15 minutes in your new Journal.
- You may continue this piece tomorrow or share with a family member 😊
Turn in You Assignment:
Spelling/ Grammar: return completed packet to school when we return.
Writing: bring journal to school when we return.
Day 1 – Social Studies/Science
Overview:
Read Scholastic News magazine I’ll Keep Our Tradition Alive that stretches our social studies/science learning to other current events topics.
Estimated Time: 25 minutes.
Explanation:
Students will use nonfiction reading strategies and social studies/science background knowledge (schema) to read and respond to Scholastic News article.
Tasks:
- Preview the cover the Scholastic magazine
- Study the title, pictures, captions, graphics, information presented
- Think about the topic you will be reading about and ask yourself your purpose for reading
- Preview first main news article – A Totem Pole Tradition
- Study the special text features of the article-title, headings, pictures/captions, maps, illustrations, diagrams, fact boxes, bold text, words to know, etc. Think about how these special text features can help you understand the text better.
- Preview the “News Review” questions on the back page #1-4 before you read the article.
- Read the first main article, A Totem Pole Tradition, coding the text as your read.
- Answer questions #1-4 in “News Review” on back page
- You will finish the rest of this Scholastic New Magazine tomorrow😊
