    Explanation of Activity: Today, students should complete one activity from the list of "Extras" posted on Canvas.

    Tasks:

    • Choose an activity from the list in the Assignment called "Distance Learning Extras"
    • After you have completed the task, you are to write 4-5 sentences telling me what you did and why you would recommend it to someone else. PLEASE be mindful of proper capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure!

    • Write a journal entry
    • Add a creative element
    • Submit on Canvas

     Estimated Time: 30 minutes 

     Explanation of Activity: 

    In this activity, you will keep a record of your daily life during this unprecedented time. This journal entry should be at least 5 sentences and can be formatting in any way you would like—you may choose to write it as a diary entry, short story, or poem! No matter how you choose to write it, make use to reflect on the following:

    • What you are seeing?
      • Around you
      • On the news
      • On social media
    • What you are doing?
      • How are you keeping busy?
      • What is distance learning like?
    • How are you feeling?

    Once you have finished your journal entry, please add a picture or other creative element.

    Tasks:

    1. Begin by opening a new Word document and save it on your computer as “Your Last Name_Coronavirus Journal”
    2. Begin by reviewing the assignment above.
    3. Next, create your journal entry in any format you choose.
    4. Add your creative element.
    5. Finally, submit your assignment on Canvas.

    Overview: Today's activity is a continuation of Thursday's work. 

    Estimated Time:  30 minutes

    Explanation of Activity: Today, students should try writing their own poem called If I Were in Charge of the World using the original poem as the model.  Submit your poem on Canvas.       

    Quick Things to Know:  All materials you will need are on my Canvas site.  Links above. There is a module called Distance Learning, and each lesson will be listed by date in that module.                 

    Tasks:

    • Review the poem If I Were in Charge of the World
    • Write your Own Poem using If I Were in Charge of the World as a model

    Assignment:  Write your own poem called If I Were in Charge of the World using the original poem as your model.  Try to follow the exact structure of Viorst’s poem but include your own ideas. Every stanza must begin “If I were in charge of the world.” Your ideas can be a large perspective (as in the entire world) or more personally focused (as in your life, community, or school).  Submit your completed poem on Canvas.  Have fun with it and be creative.

    Overview: We have reviewed "What is Poetry". Today, we will continue to look at poetry by reading and reflecting upon If I Were in Charge of the World by Judith Viorst.  And, as always, keep reading your independent book every day.

    Explanation of Activity:  Students should read the poem If I Were in Charge of the World by Judith Viorst.  There are then five questions to review.  Submit answers to the questions on Canvas.

    Overview:  Welcome to Distance Learning!  In this uncertain time, we can still learn, practice skills, and most importantly, read.  Keep reading an independent book every day.  To begin our distance learning activities, we are going to start by reviewing "What Is Poetry?"

    Estimated Time: 60 minutes (This is a two-day activity.)

    Explanation of Activity: Students will review poetry as a form of writing, including some of the common devices used in poetry.

    3. Lastly, tell me how you did on the poetry quiz. What are your strengths, and what are your weaknesses?  Use the terms from the Flocabulary activities to write a brief response and submit your response as a text entry on Canvas.
