    WEEK OF MARCH 30TH - APRIL 3RD 

    I understand that many of you are just finding this page.  No Worries!! If you need to look at an earlier lesson scroll down.  Starting on Tuesday, April 14th we will switch to SeeSaw lessons/activities.  Remember, I understand  if you are feeling overwhelmed.  We got this Cold Spring!  If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to reach out and say, "hi" I am here.  

     

    KINDERGARTEN (MRS. QUILLEN) Mrs. Bach

    Overview:  Look for familiar words and use the illustrations/photos in a book to determine what the book is about.

    Estimated Time: 20 minutes

    Explanation:  Students use familiar words and illustrations/photos to try and predict what a book will be about or to help them read a story.

    Things to Know:  Familiar words and illustrations can help us read books/words that may be difficult.  Read a book to see how familiar words and illustrations can help you understand a story.

    Tasks: Read a book – use familiar words and illustrations/photos to help.

     

    GRADE 1 (MRS. ROSENCRANS) Mrs. Lewis

    Overview: Choosing Books and Reading for Pleasure

    Estimated Time: 20 minutes

    Explanation: How are readers’ choices influenced by authors? Identify authors that appeal to students as readers.

    Tasks:

    • Talk about your favorite books with a family member or friend – what kinds of authors do you like? Why do you like them?
    • See if you can find a book you love in your house or in the Cold Spring Library Catalog. If you have the book at home, read it with a family member or friend.
    • Read a book of your choice from Ryan and Craig's Youtube site.  

    GRADE 2 (MRS. ROSENCRANS) Mrs. Davis

    Overview: Finding Books in a Library and Reading for Pleasure

    Estimated Time: 20 minutes

    Explanation: Students will practice putting library books in order and read for pleasure.

    Tasks:

    • Explain to a friend or family member how fiction books (easy picture books) are organized in a library. What are the steps to finding a book on the shelves?
    • Organize a shelf of books in your own house like the library’s shelves. If you don’t have a shelf of books, you can draw one!
    • Read I'm Bored and try the illustration.
    • After reading, see if you can make up a call number for this book.

     

    GRADE 3 (MRS. ROSENCRANS)  Mrs. Gregory

     

    Overview: Doing Research and Reading for Pleasure

    Estimated Time: 20 minutes

    Explanation: Students will do personal research on World Book Kids and read for pleasure.

    Tasks:

    • Talk about some of your favorite topics to research with a family member or friend. If you want to, you can choose the same topic as last week to learn even more! 
    • Log in to World Book Online (Kids) and research a few of your favorite topics (user: cblibrary password: cblibrary)
    • See if you can find a book you might use to research your topic in the Cold Spring Library Catalog (or local library).
    • Choose some read alouds from Storyline Online or read a favorite book with a family member or friend.

    GRADE 4 (MRS. ROSENCRANS) Mr. Lodwig

    Overview: Doing Research and Reading for Pleasure

    Estimated Time: 20 minutes

    Explanation: Students will do biography research on PebbleGo and read for pleasure.

    Tasks:

    • Find the list of people you would like to learn more about that you made last week (it was on a piece of notebook paper or a Word document on your computer).
    • Log in to PebbleGo (scroll down the page and look under "Databases") and see if you can find one of the people you put on the list under “Biographies” (user: cblib password: school)
    • If not, pick another person that you find interesting. Read about him/her!
    • See if you can find a book you might use to research this new person in the Cold Spring Library Catalog (or local library).

     

    GRADE 5 (MRS. ROSENCRANS) Mrs. Pickett

    Overview: Doing Research and Reading for Pleasure

    Estimated Time: 20 minutes

    Explanation: Students will do personal research on World Book and read for pleasure.

    Tasks:

    • Find your notebook paper from last week.
    • Log in to World Book Online (Student) and find your topic’s page again (user: cblibrary password: cblibrary)
    • Do more research if you need to.
    • Use blank paper or PowerPoint Online (click “Sign in” to Office 365 with your CB username and password) to continue creating an informative poster about your topic. Add pictures, fun fonts, use art supplies if you have them, and be creative. We will finish this poster next week and share it!

    GRADE 6 (MRS. ROSENCRANS) 

    Overview: Doing Research and Reading for Pleasure

    Estimated Time: 20 minutes

    Explanation: Students will cite a source using World Book and Noodletools and read for pleasure.

    Tasks:

    • Choose a topic of interest – it can be the same as last week or different!
    • See if you can find a website that you could use to research your topic (use the Website Search Engines) on the Elementary Library Resources page.
    • Log in to Noodletools again (scroll down the page, under "Bibliography").
    • Open your project called "Distance Learning."
    • Cite your website. Remember, you will need to fill in every field manually (which means by finding it on your website and typing it into the Noodletools form). It’s like a treasure hunt! (Noodletools Cheat Sheet Download!)

    Overview:  What makes us choose the books that we choose?

    Estimated Time: 20 minutes

    Explanation:  Students will discuss with someone at home, things that influence them in choosing a particular book.

    Things to Know:  There are different reasons why we choose certain books.   Do you choose a book because of the title?  Do the illustrations draw you to the book?  Is the subject of the book appealing to you? Discuss your reasons for choosing books that you read.

    Tasks

    • Discussion
    • Read a book of your choice

    Overview: Finding Books in a Library and Reading for Pleasure

    Estimated Time: 20 minutes

    Explanation: Students will practice putting library books in order and read for pleasure.

    Tasks:

    • Teach a favorite stuffed animal how fiction books (easy picture books) are organized in a library. What are the steps to finding a book on the shelves?
    • Play Order in the Library – a fun game about how to find books!
    • See if you can find call numbers for Dog Man books in the Cold Spring Library Catalog
    • Choose some read alouds from Storyline Online or read a favorite book.
    • After reading, see if you can make up a call number for your book!

     

    GRADE 3 (MRS. ROSENCRANS)

      Overview: Caring for Books 

      Estimated Time: 20 minutes 

      Explanation: Student will think about ways to correctly care for books.  They should think about where to put them for safe keeping and how to keep them safe from spills and messes. 

      Things to Know:  There are several ways to keep library books safe and clean.  Discuss these things with someone at home. 

      Tasks:

      Overview: Fiction vs. Nonfiction and Reading for Pleasure 

      Estimated Time: 20 minutes 

      Explanation: Students will identify the differences between fiction and nonfiction and read for pleasure. 

      Tasks

      • Explain the difference between a fiction book and a nonfiction book to a family member or friend.
      • See if you can find an example of each in your house or in the Cold Spring Library Catalog.
      • Choose some read aloudsfrom Ryan & Craig's website or read a favorite book with a family member or friend. 
      • After reading, decide whether the book was fiction or nonfiction and tell a family member or friend why!

        

      GRADE 2 (MRS. ROSENCRANS) 

      Overview: Finding Books in a Library and Reading for Pleasure 

      Estimated Time: 20 minutes 

      Explanation: Students will practice putting library books in order and read for pleasure. 

      Tasks

      • See if you can find call numbers for Elephant & Piggiebooks in the Cold Spring Library Catalog.

      • After reading, see if you can make up a call number for your book!

        

      GRADE 3 (MRS. ROSENCRANS) 

      Overview: Doing Research and Reading for Pleasure

      • What are some of your state's plants and animals?
      • What is a natural resource that your state makes?
      • What is a geographical feature (land feature) your state has?
      • See if you can find a book you might use to research your state in the Cold Spring Library Catalog(or local library).
      • Click here to start reading an eBook of your choice.
