    Daily Expectations for Students

     

     

     *Attend our classroom check-in by:

    4th Period – Class starts at 12:30 PM on TUESDAYS

    7th Period – Class starts at 10:30 AM on THURSDAYS

     

    *Teams Invites will be sent out each week!

    - Check CANVAS for our daily/weekly assignments. There is a module for each week.  All information will be right on the weekly Canvas module.

     - Complete and submit assignments by the due date.

     - Abide by CB Online Meeting Guidelines, found here.

    Office Hours

     - I will be available to parents and students each day (Monday–Thursday) from 2:30-3:00 PM. I am also available on Fridays 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  You can reach me through email (kgerth@cbsd.org) or Teams calling.

     - Our classroom will be using CANVAS as the primary mode of assigning and collecting work.

    *I will NOT be posting any more Distance Learning activities for the rest of the week.  The ONLY thing that you need to do is look out for the Microsoft Team Invitation that was sent out for 4th and 7th periods.  Check your Outlook emails from Mrs. Gerth! It is during these meeting times that your teachers will 'GO LIVE' with you to explain Distance Learning Phase 2. This next phase will start on Monday April 6th!

    Distance Learning Activity, Day 11 - Tuesday (3/31/20): Mrs. Gerth's 4th & 7th Period ELA A Course

     

    Overview: Students will complete a Common Lit (online) reading passage with comprehension questions. 

    Estimated Time: Approximately 30 minutes to read and answer assessment and discussion questions

    Materials: Just your laptop

    Things to know: The Common Lit is entitled, HOW THE NEWS MEDIA WORKS.  This may be a difficult text for some of you, since it is a 7th grade level passage.  If you are having a hard time reading the passage, please utilize the 'read to you/audio' option!

    Tasks: 

    1. Log into Clever
    2. Click on the Common Lit app (Teal box with book inside)
    3. Click on the short story called, HOW THE NEWS MEDIA WORKS
    4. Complete the Guided Reading Questions as you go, then the assessment and discussion questions.
    5. Please submit your responses right in the program when you finish!

    Distance Learning Activity, Day 8 - Thursday (3/26/20): Mrs. Gerth's 4th & 7th Period ELA A Course

    *PLEASE COMPLETE THIS TASK! I NEED THIS DATA FOR YOUR IEP PROGRESS REPORTS!* 

    Overview: Today you will be completing a Timed Reading Plus passage on your own through CANVAS!  I am counting this for your progress monitoring for 3rd Marking Period, so it is important you complete this task AND put forth a strong effort.

    Estimated Time: Approximately 30 minutes

    Materials: Laptop/CANVAS

    Things to know: You will still have 2 chances to answer the questions, so it will run just like we do it in school, but with electronic answers.

    Tasks: 

    • Log on to my CANVAS page (4th/7th periods)
    • Under the Distance Learning Module, you will see the assignment called TIMED READING PLUS 3rd MP #3
    • Read the passage first! Download the PDF so that you can come back to it as you answer the questions.
    • Answer the 10 questions to the best of your ability
    • If you did not get a 10/10, take it a second time. The answers will not be shared, but it will tell you which questions you got right and wrong.  You will have to answer the ones you got correct again, so pay attention to your correct answers, so you don’t get them wrong the 2nd time! 😊

    Submission Guidelines: The highest score earned from both attempts will be the score I keep and record for your reading goal progress in your IEP.

    Overview: Participate in an online/virtual Author Talk through Microsoft Teams! This is a school-wide event, so be prepared and follow the proper etiquette rules provided below. The author is Joelle Charbonneau The ‘virtual visit’ will begin right at 11:00 AM.  Please don’t be late!  She is the author of the following books:

    Distance Learning Activity, Day 6 - Tuesday (3/24/20): Mrs. Gerth's 4th & 7th Period ELA A Course

     

    Overview: Continuing on with our unit of Using the Right Words (homophones), you’ll be completing a lesson on learning and applying the words ‘to, two, too’

    Estimated Time: Approximately 20 minutes

    Things to know: Even if you feel comfortable with your prior knowledge of the use of these homophones, I still urge you to watch the video(s) before completing the activity.

    Tasks:

    Distance Learning Activity, Day 3 - Thursday (3/19/20): Mrs. Gerth's 4th & 7th Period ELA A Course

     

    Overview: Students will read a PSSA passage, then complete 8 multiple choice questions in an online quiz format (no grade).

    Estimated Time: Approximately 30 minutes to read and answer online quiz questions. *If you have been working 30 minutes and don't finish, that is okay, you'll have until tomorrow to submit it.

    Materials: Laptop 

    Things to know: There are multiple chances for you to try and get a better score!

    Tasks: 

    1. Log into CANVAS
    2. Click 4th/7th Periods, and go to Distance Learning Module
    3. Click on the activity called Good Taste PSSA Practice
    4. Click on the link to download the passage. Keep it open in Microsoft Word
    5. After reading the passage, answer the 8 quiz questions (comprehension on the passage)

    Submission Guidelines: Completion will be done by submitting your quiz once you finished.  Again, you may take it unlimited tries to improve your score! 

    **This is not due Friday evening, so if you need more time, you have time to work again tomorrow.**

    Distance Learning Activity, Day 2 - Wednesday (3/18/20): Mrs. Gerth's 4th & 7th Period ELA A Course

    Tasks:

    Distance Learning Activity, Day 1 (3/17/20): Mrs. Gerth's 4th & 7th Period ELA A Course

     

    Overview:

    Students will complete a one-paragraph journal entry on their thoughts and feelings around the Coronovirus.

     

    Estimated Time: Approximately 30 minutes

    -5 minutes of collecting thoughts and brainstorming

    -20 minutes to write the one paragraph (MINIMUM 7 sentences) response to the prompt

    -5 minutes to submit in Canvas

     

    Explanation:

    Students benefit from frequent writing opportunities.  Through this topic/prompt, students will be able to reflect and share their thoughts and feelings about the current pandemic, the COVID-19 virus, while practicing their writing skills.

     

    Materials:

    - Students may hand write on paper or type their paragraph in Microsoft Word

    - Laptop/paper and pencil

    - Submission will be done in Canvas  (*Upload file if typed in Word, take a picture and upload if hand-written)

     

    Things to know:

    **Please ensure your submission of this one paragraph essay is submitted on Canvas by 8:30 PM on 3/17/20!**

     

    Tasks: 

    1. Instructional Input Activity

     

    Students must reflect and brainstorm about the following topic:

    This is certainly a worrisome time for our whole world right now with the COVID-19 virus spreading.  I'm sure that everyone has differing views on the seriousness of our current situation, and I'd like to know how you are feeling. 

    Are you worried at all about this virus?  Why or why not?  Has your family done any big shopping trips to stock up on certain things? How do you think the 'Distance Learning' experience will go for you?

    * If you answer each of the four questions asked in the prompt, you should easily be able to get to a minimum of 7 sentences.

     

    2. Guided Practice Activity

    Now that you have some thoughts and ideas jotted down or floating around in your mind, begin to write a response essay.  PLEASE remember to include a topic sentence that sets the tone for the focus of the essay.  You will also need to include a concluding sentence as well.

    Examples of topic sentences:

    #1 - (simple and to the point) - The Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has now caused a lot of panic in our area. I feel...

    #2 - (a little more attention getting) - Have you heard about stores selling out of toilet paper and hand sanitizer?  What is with all this chaos going on in our area?  I think that the Coronavirus is...

     

    Examples of concluding sentences:

    #1 - There will be a lot of day to day changes for a while, but in due time, I believe things will go back to normal and everyone will be safe.

    #2 - So if you are as panicked as me and my family, make sure you run out quick and stock up on those necessary things so you are ready for a quarantine!

     

    3. Independent Practice Activity 

    You must make sure you read and re-read your essay before your submission on Canvas.  Remember the following (use it as a checklist):

    - Topic Sentence (see ideas above)

    - MINIMUM of 7 SENTENCES

    - Answers to the 4 questions in the prompt are addressed

    - Concluding sentence (see ideas above)

    *REVISE/EDIT for capital letters, ending punctuation, no fragments/runs ons

     

    Submission Guidelines:

    **Please ensure your submission of this one paragraph essay is submitted on Canvas by 8:30 PM on 3/17/20!**

    If you typed your essay in Word, please upload the document to my CANVAS page.
