    Hello 2H!  Here are the distance learning plans for today, MARCH 17, 2020.  Today's Special is Quest, so refer to Gayman's Distance Learning page for specific activities for today's special.

    Grade 2, Day 1 Math: Practice Counting to 1, 000

    Estimated Time for 4 Activities: Approximately 45 minutes

    Activities 1-3:

    Overview: Practice counting-up from 100 to 1, 000 by ones, tens and hundreds.

    Explanation: Count on by ones, tens and hundreds from 100 up to 1, 000.

    Things to know:

    1. Sit with someone at home to practice counting to 1,000.
    2. Activities for the day’s lessons are included in the math packet that was sent home.
    3. More specific directions are provided on each sheet/activity that goes along with these lessons.

    Tasks:

    1. Practice counting-up from 100 to 1, 000 by ones, tens and hundreds (packet pages 1-3).

    Activity 4:

    Overview: Use place value to read, write, and represent numbers to 1, 000 using standard, expanded, and word form.

    Explanation: You will read and write numbers up to 1, 000 in standard, expanded, and word form.

    Things to know:

    1. Sit with someone at home to practice reading and writing numbers up to 1, 000 in standard, expanded, and word form.
    2. Examples: 563

    Standard form: 563

    Expanded form: 500+60+3

    Word Form: Five hundred and sixty-three

    1. More specific directions are provided on each sheet/activity that goes along with these lessons.

    Tasks:

    1. Write each given number in standard, expanded, and word form (packet pages 4-7).
    2. Play a game to write a number in standard, expanded, and word form (packet page 8, and it’s okay to cut the cards out even though there are problems on the back).

    How to turn in these assignments:  Please keep the packet in your folder to be returned when we come back to school.

    Grade 2, Day 1 Phonics/Reading

    Estimated time for 2 activities:  Approximately 45 minutes

    Phonics

    Overview:  Review the -ar spelling pattern (15 minutes)

    Explanation:  You will review the -ar spelling pattern with someone at home and choose an activity for additional word work practice.

    Things to know: 

    1. Sit with someone at home.
    2. You can do this activity in a variety of ways (out loud, paper and pencil, rainbow write, on Seesaw etc.)
    3. Use the “This or That” worksheet that is in your yellow folder.

    Tasks:

    1. Generate a list of words with the -ar spelling pattern (harm, farm, hard etc.) OR choose an activity from the “This or That” worksheet that is in your folder. Take a picture of your work and post it on Seesaw (using your new at home log-on or by sending a message).

    Reading

    Overview:  Build your reading stamina, comprehension and practice reading with fluency and expression (30 minutes)

    Explanation:  You will be reading a fiction text aloud to a toy (or pet or family member).

    Things to Know:

    1. Choose a book that is fiction for today. You can use a book that you have at home or you can log-on to Epic! to choose a fiction book for today.
    2. Continue to use your green fluency book each day to build reading fluency.

     Tasks:

    1. Complete your one-minute fluency passage reading.
    2. Choose a favorite toy or stuffed animal and read a fiction story out loud OR choose one of the options on the Epic! reading bingo page that is in your folder.
    3. Feel free to post a video of you reading your story on Seesaw.

    How to Turn in these Assignments:  Please save any papers with your work in your folder. I will also respond to comments on Seesaw as they are posted.

    Grade 2, Day 1 Writing

    Overview: Draft a “how to” writing piece (30 minutes)

    Explanation: Second graders will fill in a graphic organizer for a “how to” writing piece

    Things to Know:

    1. Students can independently use the graphic organizer that is included for this writing piece.
    2. It may be helpful to have a discussion with your child about a topic they want to write about for this piece before they get started.

    Tasks:

    1. Use the “how to” graphic organizer in your yellow folder.
    2. Think of a topic you know a lot about. This topic should teach how to do something.
    3. Plan your writing.
    4. Write a topic sentence.
    5. Organize your writing with transition words. Remember to explain things step by step.
    6. Include lots of information.

    How to turn in this Assignment:  Keep the graphic organizer in your yellow folder.  You will need it for the next couple of days.

    Grade 2, Day 1 Social Studies

    Overview:  Review different types of communities

    Explanations:  Students will compare and contrast two communities

    Things to Know:

    1. This can be completed with paper and pencil, outside with sidewalk chalk or even in conversation form.

    Tasks:

    1. Sit with someone at home. Think of two different communities (urban, suburban, rural).  How are they alike?  How are they different?
    2. Make a Venn diagram or a T chart on paper or post one on Seesaw. Write down as many things as you can that are the same and different between these communities.

    How to Turn in this Assignment:  Save any completed work in your folder.
