The videos below provide a few examples of bar model problems. Bar modeling is a problem solving strategy that is emphasized throughout the Math in Focus curriculum. This strategy encourages students to draw pictures / bars and use their math sense to solve for missing information. In some instances, students can use other strategies to solve word problems, and they won't need bar models. However, there are particular problems within the Math in Focus curriculum that require this strategy. While some bar model problems can be very challenging, I believe that students will improve on these problems as we progress throughout the year. In the end, I believe that utilizing the bar modeling strategy will help students become better problem solvers.
