8th Grade Modern Art and Design

  • Course Description

    This course is eighteen weeks and is an extension of elementary art concepts, skills and prior experiences. The studio units focused upon include advanced intermediate skills and concepts in drawing, painting, commerical art, architecture, crafts and animation. In art history, students will study the artistic styles that were developed beginning in 1915 until the end of the twenteth century. A variety of art movements and artists will be explored. Students will further develop knowledge and skills related to the disciplines of Art Criticism, Aethetics and Philosophy, through various activites including critiques, class discussions, reflections, and writing.

    This week in the art room:

    11/19/18-11/23/18

    Students will work on shading their free-time project. Students will also work on the planning and sketchbook assignment for the next project will be to create a book end inspired by a modern artist of their choice.

    11/12/18-11/16/18

    Students will continue to work on their free-time project sketches. Students will then start their good copy when they are finished with their sketches. Students are to just draw out their good copy- they will shade it in with color at a later time during the second marking period. When the students are finished with that they will work on a mandala worksheet. The students will learn the different shading techniques that they will use to color their free-time project. Studnets will practice these techniques and have a reference sheet to look at in case they forget the different techniques.

    11/5/18-11/9/18

    Students will continue to work on their free-time project sketches. Students will then start their good copy when they are finished with their sketches. Students are to just draw out their good copy- they will shade it in with color at a later time during the second marking period. When the students are finished with that they will work on a mandala worksheet.

    10/29/19-11/2/18

    Students wil continue to carve their basic outline of their animal and then start the printing process. Students will use printing/inking groups set up in class in order to create 8 prints in different colors. Students will be shown the printing technique multiple times prior to engaging and completing this task. Students will begin carving the top layer when they are finished printing the bottom layer. The studnets will outline their details on the linoleum in sharpie and then carve everything away except the sharpie. The teacher will demonstrate this to the students know the process. Students will then chose their best four prints and mount them on the good copy paper. Students will then complete the rubric and work on their free-time project. 

    10/22/18-10/26/18

Students will be shown the printing technique multiple times prior to engaging and completing this task. Students will begin carving the top layer when they are finished printing the bottom layer. The teacher will demonstrate this to the students know the process.

    10/1/18 - 10/5/18

    Students will finish their good copy sketch and the teacher will demonstrate how to transfer their drawing onto the linoleum using tracing paper and pencil. Students will then learn how to carve around the basic shaoe of the animal. When that is complete students will create 8 prints.

    9/24/18 - 9/28/18

    Students continue to work on their sketchbook assignment and begin their sketches. They will be creating a reuction print in a series as the style of the Pop artist Andy Warhol. Student sketch out their ideas of three different animals with two sketches fo each- a general shaoe of the animal and then a finished detail sketch. STudents will be using both of them during the assignment. When students are ready to move on to their good copy they should star the sketch they want ot use and will draw it lightly on a piece of 6" by 6" paper.

    9/17/18 - 9/21/18

    Students finished up their color wheel and began working on their sketchbook assignment that will help brainstorm ideas for their new project. Their project is based off of Pop Art and creating a reduction print. The students will be using their laptops to research the art movement and Andy Warhol in order to genereate ideas and furhter their education. 

    9/11/18 - 9/14/18

     Students worked on their free time projects- which will be worked on when a student finishes an assignment early throughout the course of both marking periods. Sectinos are due each marking period and will be graded. Students also reviewed coloe theory, took some notes and began to paint the color wheel on the back of their sketchbook assignment. Students had to work well with their classmates as they had to carefully mix all other colors besides the primary colors.

    9/4/18- 9/7/18

     Students in 8th grade art created sketchbooks during the first week of school. This will be a tool for them to use throughout the smester to generate ideas, take notes, reflect and creative problem solve. Students got acclamated with the routine of the classroom and went over the syllabus with the teacher. Students began to learn more about their free time project as well.
