     Chapter 5

    Multiplication

In Chapter 5, multiplication and division facts from Grade 2 and Chapter 4 are reviewed.  Students will also be extending them to 3-digit multiplication situations: multiplying with models, multiplying without regrouping and multiplying with regrouping.  Properties of multilication such as the communicative property, associative property, and distributive property, are all applied in multiplying 2- and 3- digit numbers by a 2-digit number with and without regrouping.  Students also make sense of the concept of place value to help them multiply using the standard algorithm in vertical form.  Students are encouraged throughout the chapter to sue their understanding of multiplication with models as an alternative method of multiplying.
Students will use the strategies learned in this chapter to solve real-world problems and build on the concepts in Grade 4 to multiply and divide multi-digit numbers.
