During the Motion Unit, the children will explore a topic that is near and dear to them-motion! This unit offers an introduction to physics through activities that engage children's bodies and minds. The children will be invited to move their own bodies in various ways through many explorations. Some explorations in this unit involve building ramps, rolling toy cars, dropping and crashing marbles, sliding pennies, and even flying paper airplanes. Children love these activities- and doing them will lead children to think about the familiar topic of motion in new and "scientific" ways.

By the end of this unit, the students will be able to...

    • understand motion is movement
    • understand motion always follows a path
    • understand motion has speed, which is related to how far something goes (distance) and how long it takes (time)
    • explain the way to change how something moves is to give it a push or a pull
    • explain how collisions cause pushes that may change the motion of all the colliding objects
    • understand friction is a force (a pull) that slows down moving objects
    • understand on Earth, gravity is a force that pulls everything down all the time
