Going Green- Reading - Students are reading text with a shared theme of being environmentally aware. We have read about alternative sources of energy, such as solar and wind power. We have also read about conserving our natural resources and taking care of our planet, as well as protecting endangered species and their habitats. Students are working on drawing conclusions, using text evidence and prior knowledge to develop statements about the topic. We have also worked on understanding idioms, noun suffix, and prefixes.
40 Week Challenge - Reading for pleasure is one of the greatest ways for students to build background knowledge and build their stamina for reading. This year we will embark on a 40 week challenge of reading. Students will be encourage to select and read chapter books they feel passionate about. When they complete a book they will take a picture of the cover and add it to their board. These will be posted around the room. This will serve as a spring board for conversation as well a visual representation of their reading through out the year. The number of books read will be up to the students, we will talk about setting a reasonable goal and check in periodically to see how they are doing in attaining this goal.
