    Doing math means making a lot of mistakes.  It is inevitable.  However, you should learn from your mistakes so as not to repeat them.  Follow this simple advice, and you will be far more successful with your study of mathematics.

    Below are some online tutorial websites to help you avoid making the same mistakes twice.  They are grouped according to subject.  Enjoy.

     

    GENERAL ARTICLES ON MATHEMATICS

    WHO’S COUNTING - This is a great link from ABC News.  This site contains countless articles written by Temple University mathematics professor John Allen Paulos (author of many books including his most famous, “Innumeracy.”)  What’s nice about these articles is that they are entertaining, informative and written at a level that allows anyone to understand them.  DANGER:  if you are not careful, you may spend hours reading these articles!

    THE MAA MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES DIGITAL LIBRARY - This web site is just what it says.  It is a large digital library created by the MAA.  You can find links to such things as mathematical articles, MAA book reviews, Loci: the online publication of the MAA, and pdf copies of articles that have won MAA writing awards.  However, the best part of the library is the “ON THIS DAY” section.  Learn about things that happened “on this day” in mathematical history.  You can even pick the day you want to look at … including events on your birthday!

     

    ALL TYPES OF MATH

    MATHWORLD - This is probably the single greatest website on mathematics.  It is basically a mathematical library containing detailed articles on topics in every branch of mathematics.

    YOURTEACHER.COM - This is an interesting video-based website.  It contains links to various mathematical subjects from Pre-Algebra to Geometry as well as some college math courses.  If you click on a course, you will be presented with a list of topics in that course.  Click on a topic and you will get a brief video explaining the topic.  If you pay a subscription fee, you will have greater access to the video lessons.

    SHODOR - This is an incredible website from SHODOR: A National Resource for Computational Science Education.  It contains applets and activities for an enormous amount of mathematical topics.  Topics include all the standards plus fractals, graph generators, the Monty Hall problem, Buffon’s Needle and cellular automata.

    GRAPHING CALCULATORS (TI-83/84) - This is a great site to help you with your graphing calculator.  Calculator procedures are listed by topic.  Once a topic is selected, you have explanations and screenshots to help you.  Or, if you prefer, there are animations to walk you through each procedure.  It is VERY helpful!

     

    ALGEBRA 1

    PURPLEMATH.COM - A great website with tutorials/notes on just about every algebra topic.  Problems for each topic are solved and explained in great detail.

    ALGEBASICS.COM - This is a really interesting site.  On the homepage, there is a listing of 16 sections involving all of the main topics in any Algebra course.  By clicking on a section, you can access tutorials on the different concepts included in each section.  The tutorials are audio driven with a virtual chalkboard.  It is a good resource for both Algebra 1 and Algebra 2.

    ALGEBRAHELP.COM - A great website that offers online worksheets.  You type in the answer and the program grades your answers.  A nice thing to have when preparing for tests!

    ALGEBRA 2/TRIGONOMETRY

    PURPLEMATH.COM - A great website with tutorials/notes on just about every algebra topic.  Problems for each topic are solved and explained in great detail.

    GEOMETRY

    ANALYZEMATH.COM/GEOMETRY.HTML - This site offers some great tutorials on the major topics of geometry.  The best part in the interactive tutorial section, using java applets.  These interactive tutorials are great for visualizing some of the main principles of geometry.

    LIBRARY.THINKQUEST.ORG/20991/geo/index.html - This site offers some basic review of the main concepts of geometry.  With each topic, the site includes some examples and outlines of proofs.  What I really like about this site is that, at the end of each section, there is a small review quiz to test your understanding of the topic.

    PRE-CALCULUS

    ANALYZEMATH.COM/PRECALCULUSTUTORIALS.HTML - This site breaks down the pre-calculus into the major types of functions needed for the course.  All of the major topics of pre-calculus are also presented in the tutorials.  Most of the tutorials contain examples with written explanations.

    CALCULUS

    CALCULUS.ORG - Holy cow!  This site is UNBELIEVABLE!  You can find just about whatever it is you are looking for involving calculus.  There are tutorials, problems with worked solutions, applets, study tips, links to other calculus sites, etc., etc., etc.

    CALCULUS-HELP.COM - A great site for all sorts of tutorials involving calculus.  It includes some small videos to better explain some of the main concepts of calculus.  This site also includes a “problem of the week.”

    A.P. CALCULUS

    COLLEGE BOARD – A.P. CALCULUS AB - This is the official site for the AP Calculus AB exam.  This site describes the prerequisites needed to take the course, goals of the course, registration and sample questions.  If you have any interest in taking this course, check out this site.

    A.P. STATISTICS

    COLLEGE-BOARD – AP STATISTICS - This is the official site for the AP Statistics exam.  This site describes the prerequisites needed to take the course, goals of the course, registration and sample questions.  If you have any interest in taking this course, check out this site.

    STATTREK.COM - This site has lessons on all the major topics of statistics.  At the conclusion of each lesson is a small test to check your understanding of the material.  A complete written explanation is included.

    SAT

    COLLEGE BOARD - This is the official site for the SAT.  You can register to take the test as well as take a practice test and have it scored.
