Second Chance Learning

Second Chance Learning Framework

The goal of second-chance learning in a standards-based classroom is to provide every
student the opportunity to achieve proficiency. It is commonly agreed that
second-chance learning is based upon the following premises:

  • Not all students meet the standard at the same time.
  • In a letter-grade system, grades below a 70% C- are not proficient.

Proactive Principles to Maximize Student Learning:

1. In a standards-based classroom, curriculum, instruction and assessments are
consistently correlated to the standards.

2. In a standards-based classroom, instructional strategies are consistently varied to
assess individual learning differences.

3. In a standards-based classroom, consistent checking for understanding will
significantly improve the performance of students.

Principles of Second-Chance Learning:

1. A student is eligible for second-chance learning if he/she earns a grade lower than a C-
on a major assignment (defined by individual teachers and curricular departments).

2. Second-chance learning must include a "re-teaching" component. This may occur
during Resource or in an after-school session.

3. Second-chance learning may involve the following activities:

  • A "second-chance" to re-test in order to achieve proficiency on an assessment.
A "second-chance" to demonstrate proficiency using teacher feedback on a
    performance assessment.

4. The "second-chance" to achieve proficiency should have a timeframe for completion.

5. "Second-chance re-testing", encompasses the following points:

  • A different test may be used.
  • When the child reaches proficiency, the adjusted score will be no higher than a 70% C-.

Expected Student Responsibilities for Second Chance Learning:

1. The student will pursue SCL with the teacher after receiving a grade lower than a C-
on a test or major assessment. (Below proficient). I will give them a slip explaining
specific requirements which must be signed and returned to me.

2. Following the return of a test, the student must make an appointment for an after
school help session. The individual teacher will determine the type of review session.

3. The student MUST demonstrate effort and timeliness on the original assessment

  • If the student meets ALL the above criteria,
a make-up test will be given after school
  • If the student does not meet all of the above criteria,
the student will forfeit their right to "second chance" learning.

NOTE: The student will receive a proficient score…no higher than a C-.
This framework applies only to tests and teacher assessments and
does not apply to CB District midterms, finals or benchmark assessments.
