Susan Kolterman gave the Superintendent’s Advisory Council report.  Two points of discussion were the middle school philosophy of “Second Chance Learning” and report card comments.  Second Chance Learning is an initiative allowing students repeated opportunities to become proficient in set standards of a subject.  The student is required to re-learn material before re-assessing.

The Treasurer’s report reflects all monies dedicated to student activities or projects.  If money is not spent, the account will have some funds available in May.  Mary Wright presented the council with a request for funding 19 new sewing machines for Family and Consumer Science at a cost of $3800 ($200@).  The current machines date back to 1961 and are desperately in need of upgrade.  A discussion followed.  Money is not currently available in the treasury, however a solution was found.  Bryne Sewing Connection will raffle of a quilt provided by Susan Kolterman's quilting group, and proceeds will go toward the sewing machines.  Mr. David Bassion (parent) will fund the dollar difference in order to purchase new machines on the condition that the machines purchased are the best grade.

Unami Update: Ninth grade assessment is in full swing.  Presentations are next week, Feb. 22-24.  Unami has raised over $2600 so far for Tsunami Relief and UNICEF.  Relay for Life is still in need of paper plates.  Drop off at Unami.  Cheryll Dougherty presented a power point that students will see this coming month.  All three grades as well as faculty are preparing various talent shows to raise money for Relay (7th “Say What?”  March 24, 8th “Shining Star” April 20, 9th Dance Marathon April 8, Faculty Show-Unami Night Live   May 13).

Check the newsletter for dates and times.  Unami’s musical   “Once on This Island” will have three performances: two evening (3/10 & 11) and one matinee (3/12).
