ELLIS ISLAND DAY SCHEDULE

1.
Immigrants will move to ships ~ 7:40-7:50
a.m.
After last
announcement from the captain, immigrants will move to their
ships/rooms.
2. Thank You Written to Host/Manifest
Completion ~ 7:50- 8:20 a.m.
Students
will report to their ship in assigned rooms. As a “family” they will
pre-write a thank you and proofread their comments. Once the letter has
been read by the ship’s “captain” a thank you card will be given to the
family. The letter will be addressed, sealed, and placed in a box in
the office. Please refer to the hand out for more complete
instructions. Immigrants will also complete ships’ manifests per
directions provided. At 8:20
a.m. ships will
be dismissed when all “thank-you” letters and manifests have been
completed. Families will then report to the main hall foyer.
3.
Baggage Weigh in, Food Inspection, Visa
Check,
“Coming To America” Stories - Main
Foyer/Auditorium ~ 8:20 –9:35 a.m.
Students will return to their lockers to remedy the baggage and visa
problems identified by the Door Greeters. If food is not authentic for
the time period it will be confiscated. Each family’s food will be
placed in a common family container, which will be labeled with the
family name. Each family member will be assessed an Ellis Island
processing fee of $3.00. Once checked, “families” will enter the
auditorium and wait until all “families” have been processed.
4.
“Families” Will Provide Information to
Registry Room Officer - Auxiliary Gym ~ 9:35-10:20 a.m.
If
students fail to sufficiently/successfully answer moral/political
questions they are sent to the “Legal Inquiry Board,” located in the
guidance conference room, for questioning. The whole family will
accompany the immigrant in question so they may offer testimony on
his/her behalf. Once each ship has completed the registry room pages,
immigrants will move to the large gym.
5. Testing for Medical, Mental, Literacy, and Verifying Letter to
Loved Ones- Gym ~ 10:20 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
If an immigrant fails any portion of the medical/mental testing his/her
visa will be stamped “quarantine” and he/she will serve time in
the detention/quarantine room for approximately five to ten minutes.
Immigrants then return to the gymnasium and continue to get their
testing until all stamps are obtained.
6. Lunch Eaten as a Family/Musical Performances Viewed- Cafeteria
~12:00-1:00 p.m.
No food is to be purchased from the vending machines or from
Marriott. Immigrants are permitted to leave for the bathroom;
passes need to be used. Immigrants will be permitted to purchase carton
beverages and/or bottled water.
7. Viewing of Ellis Island Video, Naturalization Oath/Swearing in of Immigrants- Auditorium ~ 1:05-2:05 p.m.
Immigrants seat themselves and view/participate in the activities
planned. After they take the oath the immigrants leave their seats
row by row, cross the stage and, after their visa is embossed, exit
the auditorium via the guidance office hall into the auxiliary
gymnasium.
8. Departing Activity of Autographs - Auxiliary Gymnasium ~ 2:05 p.m.
Immigrant’s sign visas. Dismissal at 2:25 p.m. to their lockers and
breakdown of simulation follows.
