NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY
UNAMI  CHAPTER

At Unami we give recognition to our students for academic excellence and school and community service through the National Junior Honor Society. The Unami Chapter currently has 87 ninth grade members.

Our service projects this year will include various Food Drives to help stock a local food pantry, participation in Relay for Life, and helping around Unami with activities such as Back to School Night and Peer Tutoring.

To be eligible to join, students must be in the 8th or 9th grade and meet the following criteria. They must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher. Students must also actively participate in school organizations (band, sports, newspaper, etc.) and be involved in community service activities such as those done with churches or synagogues, scouts service projects, nursing home or hospital volunteer service, etc. The focus of the community activities needs to be service as students strive to help those in the community. In addition they must hold leadership positions in these activities and/or have received awards or recognition for academics (other than GPA) or service. Finally, they must receive a positive recommendation for good citizenship from the faculty committee. Students who meet these criteria are inducted into the Honor Society at the ceremony in March.

Invitations for membership will be issued only to eligible 8th and 9th grade students in December after the end of the first marking term. This allows seventh graders to have more time to earn the 3.50 grade point average and to become involved in community and school service activities.

We hope that this information will help students and parents to be aware of the criteria for membership and will encourage students to plan every day to do their best work. As students continue in high school, They will have the opportunity to become a member of the National Honor Society, which is a real benefit that is listed on college or work applications. There are a number of scholarships available for members of the National Honor Society at the high school level.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Mendoza  or Mrs. Wingerter.
