Title of lesson:
Relay for Life
Department/Team:
Student Council and staff
Grade level(s): Designed for all grade levels
General goals:
1.
To
develop a series of events to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay
for Life
2. To
work collaboratively with sister schools to make the event one combined
middle school fund raiser
3.
To promote a spirit of volunteerism throughout
the school
4. To role model for
students the positive effects of teamwork
Process:
Student Teams
1. Identify the
criteria by which you wish to raise funds. These include the team
sponsorship provided by the actual event.
2. Approach local
businesses for donations.
3. Promote the
development of student teams.
4. Inform parents as
to the means for which the Relay for Life will be conducted. Since this
event was conducted at one middle school in an enclosed area, parents were
comfortable letting their children participate in a controlled, supervised
environment.
5. Introduce the program
to students at grade level assemblies. Invite the local American Cancer
Society representative to speak on behalf of this cause.
6. Involve parents as
sponsors of each team and as supervisors during the event. Parents
volunteer to assist in a number of capacities for a minimum of 2 hours.
7. Announce on the public
address system and the school’s website the goals of the Relay for Life
event as well as other associated fundraisers. Include consent forms, a
timeline, and guidelines for the race day.
8. Establish a
faculty/staff walking team as well.
Faculty Involvement
1.
Form a faculty committee to do an entire staff
event such as a talent show that will be produced only for the student
body.
2.
Establish a student entry fee, the proceeds
being donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
3.
Invite all colleagues to take a part either in
front of, behind, or on the sidelines. Each person can be a performer, a
stage hand, or a ticket taker.
4.
BE bulletin boards by having t-shirts designed
and designated days for wearing them as ONE group! Leave posters around
the school giving a few previews of the ‘night’ of entertainment.
5.
Promote the event by having enigmatic messages
read during morning announcements.
6. Schedule rehearsal dates and prepare for tons of
laughter!
7. PERFORM and prepare to receive a hundred thank
yous and hugs from the student audience.
