Title of lesson: Student of the Quarter

Department/Team: Seventh  and eighth grade teams

Grade level(s): 7 and 8

General goals:

1. Positive reinforcement for students exhibiting desirable behaviors

2. Identity for whole student body with the school’s and team teachers’ expectations

Process:

1. Identify the criteria by which you would like to honor students.  You can focus on one or several.

2. Approach local businesses for donations toward the prize packages.  Be sure to know how many you will be honoring over the course of the year.  It is easiest for the staff member in charge of this to obtain all prizes at the beginning of the year.

3. In your proposal to these businesses, be sure to include the criteria used to select Students of the Quarter, and try to identify businesses that may have some tie to the student body of your school.

4. Decide how many students and at what level the recognitions should take place. For instance, will this be done by team, whole grade level, or the entire school?  One boy and one girl, or does gender not matter?  How many each marking period? Each semester? Each year?

5. Introduce the program to students so they are aware that this is something toward which they can be striving as they work through each marking/school year.

6. Invite them to the assembly, and ask them to provide additional information about the student that can be included in the student’s introduction.  Also, be sure to inform them that it is a surprise and that they cannot tell the student about it.

6. Create certificates (see attached file) with students’ names, which should include signatures of all recognizing staff members, including administration.

7. Hold recognition during the school day, during a mutually convenient time for all staff involved, as well as all students from which the Students of the Quarter were chosen.

8. Be sure that introductory speeches about each Student of the Quarter begin generally and get more specific about the child as the speech continues.  The student’s name should be the last piece of information revealed.  At that point, once the student’s name is revealed, he should come forward, and at the same time, his parents should come forward.

9. Be prepared with a camera so that photos can be sent to the local paper.
