Title of lesson:  Transition to Middle School

Department/Team: Seventh grade teams

Grade level(s): 7

General goals:

1. To provide two experiences during which students acclimate themselves to their school environment and the new responsibilities of seventh grade

2. To develop a monitoring system to provide intervention as quickly as possible for students who face challenges in making the transition

3. To establish positive relationships among student, parent, and school at the beginning of the first year of middle school

Process:

1. Discover Unami Day

Principals set aside a day prior to the first day of school.

Teachers type up and mail a team letter home at end of previous school year

Teachers present in classrooms on Discover Unami to meet students and families

Parents and students find classrooms and lockers

2. A Great Beginning

Prior to the first day of school:

Schedule needs are set and teachers are assigned to duties (see attachment.)

Supplies are to be gathered and distributed  (see supply list below.)

Schedule and duties for other building teachers assigned

On the first day of school the following needs to happen:

Students report to first period teachers.  A copy of the days schedule is posted on the board.  Teachers give out assignment books to students and a copy of each students schedule.  Students create a name tag and wear it for the rest of the day.  All 7th grade students go to an assembly where they meet the principals.  They receive a brief overview of how the day will work.

Teachers and students report back to first period and complete first activity of the day.  Each 7th grade teacher has a different activity and students will rotate in their homeroom groups to each different classroom.

Science- Schedule Scrutiny and buy gym uniform

Math- Scavenger Hunt

Social Studies- Getting to Know You & Agenda Hunt

English- Locker Relay

Reading- Unami Clan (reading and crossword puzzle)

Students spend about 40 minutes in each classroom.

Following the last rotation, students report to the cafeteria for a barbecue lunch.

After lunch students report to periods 7 and 8 which are their elective classes.

The day ends with an administrative assembly.  Students meet club advisors and coaches and find out ways they can get involved at Unami.  Students are dismissed from the auditorium to busses.

3. Mentorship

After first month of school identify students who are struggling academically

Set up small mentor groups (no more than 5 kids per group)

Assign a mentor teacher

Send letter home to notify parent of selected students about program

Mentor teachers meet with groups at least once a week during a resource period to work on study skills, organization and concepts missed in class.
