General goals:
1.
To provide two experiences during which students acclimate
themselves to their school environment and the new responsibilities of
seventh grade
2. To
develop a monitoring system to provide intervention as quickly as possible
for students who face challenges in making the transition
3. To establish positive relationships
among student, parent, and school at the beginning of the first year of
middle school
Process:
1. Discover Unami
Day
Principals set
aside a day prior to the first day of school.
Teachers type up
and mail a team letter home at end of previous school year
Teachers present in
classrooms on Discover Unami to meet students and families
Parents and
students find classrooms and lockers
2. A Great Beginning
Prior to the first day of
school:
Schedule needs are
set and teachers are assigned to duties (see attachment.)
Supplies are to be
gathered and distributed (see supply list below.)

On the first day of school
the following needs to happen:
Students report to
first period teachers. A copy of the day’s
schedule is posted on the board. Teachers give out assignment books to
students and a copy of each student’s
schedule. Students create a name tag and wear it for the rest of the
day. All 7th grade students go to an assembly where they meet the
principals. They receive a brief overview of how the day will work.
Teachers and
students report back to first period and complete first activity of the
day. Each 7th grade teacher has a different activity and students will
rotate in their homeroom groups to each different classroom.

Know You & Agenda Hunt
English- Locker Relay
Reading- Unami Clan (reading
and crossword puzzle)
Students spend
about 40 minutes in each classroom.
Following the last
rotation, students report to the cafeteria for a barbecue lunch.
After lunch
students report to periods 7 and 8 which are their elective classes.
The day ends with
an administrative assembly. Students meet club advisors and coaches and
find out ways they can get involved at Unami. Students are dismissed from
the auditorium to busses.
3. Mentorship
After first month
of school identify students who are struggling academically
Set up small mentor
groups (no more than 5 kids per group)
Assign a mentor
teacher
Send letter home to
notify parent of selected students about program
Mentor teachers
meet with groups at least once a week during a resource period to work on
study skills, organization and concepts missed in class.
