This Parent Handbook has been prepared to help parents and/or guardians be better informed about Tamanend Middle School in particular and Central Bucks School District in general.  Central Bucks sees parents as equal partners in education.  We both share a responsibility for seeing that students achieve academically to the level of their ability and that they mature into healthy, self-confident, and responsible adults.

Hopefully, this handbook will help answer many of your questions.  It will offer you information about Tamanend’s academics and activities, health services and insurance, discipline and policies.  Most important of all, hopefully, it will serve as a tool to enable you to become an informed parent, an involved parent, and an equal partner in your child’s education.

As a parent, you may ask yourself, “How can I become involved with my child’s school?”  We encourage parents to become involved in any or all of the following committees or activities.

The PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL is a vital and integral part of Tamanend Middle School.  Meetings are held from 9:00 until 10:30 a.m. on the following dates:

            September 15                          February 16

            October 20                              March 16

            November 17                          April 20

            December 15                          May 18

            January 19

Valuable information about the school program, reports from other committees and a question and answer period help to make these meetings interesting.  It is also an opportunity to meet other interested parents, Mr. Hershman, the school principal, and Dr. Parry, the assistant principal.  A representative is elected from this group every spring to attend the SUPERINTENDENT’S ADVISORY BOARD.  Our representative meets with the District Superintendent and other parent representatives from other Central Bucks Schools to discuss policies, programs, problems and other relevant issues.  This representative serves as our parent liaison to the superintendent.  Reports are then made at the Parent Advisory Council about the issues discussed.

Many of our fathers find it easier to attend our early morning FATHERS’ MEETINGS They are held from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. on the following dates:

            September 17

            November 19

January 21

            March 18

            May 20

Grade level parent representatives are also available to answer questions you may have.  They are:

Grade 7          Mrs. Karen Sklencar                        215-918-2580

                                    Mrs. Susan Suffian                 215-343-4547

Grade 8          Mrs. Ginny Mee                   215-343-9247

                                    Mrs. Rosanne Virginio             215-343-6591

Grade 9          Mrs. Donna Braun                215-343-4449

                                    Mrs. Martha Malone             215-343-3756

To keep parents informed, at the beginning of the school year and with each report card, we send home the parent newsletter, “Tamanend Connection.”   Be sure to look for these newsletters as they have important dates and times for events not listed on the district calendar.

Also please remember that morning announcements are updated on E-notes each day.  There is a link on our web site at www.cbsd.org.  Under Student Resources, click on E-Notes II, Tamanend and then Morning Announcements.

During the school year, chaperones are needed for the school dances and for class trips.  Interested parents can sign up on Back-To-School night as volunteers.  We really need you in order to have these dances.  Adequate supervision is a priority.  Dance hours are from 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm, except for the Freshman Dance which will be 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm.

PUBLICATION OF STUDENTS’ PICTURES:

On occasion, a member of our Community Relation Department may take a photograph of your child while in school or while involved in school activities.  These pictures might be used in a variety of our publications suck as the staff newsletter, CB Close-Up, our community newsletter, CB Insight, the district calendar, or as part of a community Showcase display.  Your child may or may not be identified by name in the publication.

Please be assured that the photographs are never used for a commercial publication or sold to any other organization.  No identifiable photographs are used on the district website.

If you do not wish your child’s photograph to be used, please contact Karen Smith in the community Relations Department in the Administration Center at 267-893-2004.

ACADEMICS

ASSIGNMENT HANDBOOK:

At the beginning of the year, each student purchases an important assignment/handbook.  Sections included in this book are: Policy and Procedures of the Central Bucks School District, a School Calendar, study guide, and dated assignment pages for homework, projects, etc.  Parents should take time to review this book, especially the Policy and Procedures section, for further information about Central Bucks School District.

BOOKBAGS:

Students are asked to carry only books to classes.  All bookbags will be placed in lockers upon arrival to school and remain there until the end of the school day.

Students are permitted to go to their lockers before school, before and after lunch, and after school.  Except for special permission, the lockers are not to be visited at other times due to the traffic flow problems.

GRADING SYSTEM:

Report cards are distributed according to the dates listed on the district calendar.  The report card envelope must be signed by parents and returned to school.

Good News Cards are sent home periodically to advise parents of exceptional work on the part of their child or for major improvements in grades or attitude.

PROGRESS REPORTS:

Progress reports are sent out halfway through the marking period on the following dates:

            October 14                                          March 10

            December 23                                      May 19

HOMEWORK/TESTS:

Homework is generally assigned each day. A rule of thumb for the district is ten minutes per grade level (7th grade: 70 minutes, 8th grade: 80 minutes, etc.).  A test and/or quiz is given at the discretion of the particular teacher.

LIBRARY:

Students are required to have a pass from a teacher to use the library before school and during the school day.  Between classes, a pass is not required.  If students wish to use the library after school hours, they should see the librarian and be prepared to take the late bus home or get a ride from their parents.

TEAMS:

The team system is used at Tamanend.  Teams are groups of academic teachers who plan instruction and work cooperatively with an identified group of students.  The team, lead by a team leader, communicates regularly with the home.  Seventh and eighth graders are on full academic teams.  Ninth graders are teamed for English and social studies.

TEXTBOOKS:

Students are responsible for keeping textbooks covered and in good condition.  There is a change for lost or damaged books.

STUDENT DIRECTORY:

Each student will receive a copy of the Tamanend Student Directory.  This booklet will have a listing of students and staff.  Parents may choose not to have their address and/or telephone number listed.

ATTENDANCE INFORMATION

Students are required by Pennsylvania law to attend school regularly.  Parents are legally responsible for seeing that their children attend school.  Parents may be fined in district court if their children are illegally absent.  The accounting and enforcement of this regulation is the responsibility of the school district.

Beyond the requirements of law, parents should be aware that regular attendance in school has a direct relationship to the student’s academic achievement.

In order to take part in any after-school or evening event, students must attend school for at least half of that day.  At Tamanend, this time is 11:00 a.m.  A student participating in a school-sponsored trip is considered to be in attendance that day.

ABSENCES:

PARENTS ARE ASKED TO CALL THE ATTENDANCE LINE, 267-893-2920, AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE TO NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OF ANY ABSENCE.  Please leave a message after the recording.  Excused absences include illness, quarantine, death in the immediate family, inclement weather that would jeopardize the safety of the student, religious holidays, home emergencies directly related to the student, health care of the student which cannot be arranged outside of school hours, special tutorial work, and educational trips or family travel under the conditions outlined as per the School Board Policy.  Upon returning to school after an absence, a student must bring an excuse note and give it to the homeroom teacher.

To satisfy state reporting requirements, students must spend 5 hours in school to receive credit for a full day of attendance.  Students who attend school between 2 hours and 5 hours will be credited with ½ day of attendance.  Students who attend school for less than 2 hours will be marked absent for the entire day.

DOCTOR/DENTIST APPOINTMENT:

Students may be excused for short periods of time during the day for medical appointments.  A note from parents should be taken to the office before school on the day of the appointment.  If the time involved is early morning, a parent should call the office that morning.  If leaving during school hours, students must report to the office before being dismissed.  Parents must pick up students in the office.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:

Unexcused absences include truancy, employment, oversleeping, missing the school bus, babysitting, visiting relatives, working at home, recreational activities, shopping, and staying home to do school work.  Students with an unexcused absence are expected to make up the time missed and will not receive credit for the work missed.

A student is considered late if he/she is not in homeroom by 7:30 a.m.  Students must report to the office (with a note from their parent/guardian explaining their lateness) to receive a late pass to get into class.  Such reasons as missing the bus, oversleeping etc. are not valid excuses for lateness.  Starting with the third unexcused tardy, an administrative detention will be issued.  Lateness will usually result in one-hour detention.  If the problem persists, stronger measures may be taken.  Late time may be accumulated and count toward illegal absences from school.

EDUCATIONAL TRIPS AND FAMILY TRAVEL:

Children may also be excused from school twice during the school year for up to a total of 5 days, for educational tours or trips, taken by the student with immediate family members in attendance.

Requests for such trips must be sent by the parent in writing using the Approved Absence Request Form at least one week prior to the absence so that students can obtain work to keep current with class progress.  Forms are available from the office.  The principal must approve all such requests and will consider whether the trip is truly educational in nature, whether there is sufficient reason for the trip to be scheduled during school hours, and whether the student has already missed an excessive number of school days due to absences.

Families should do everything possible to schedule family vacations during the summer or on non-school days during the school year.  Absences for family travel will be excused when the student would either be left alone or a non-family member would be required to supervise the student.

MAKING UP MISSED WORK:

Assignments are also posted on our website.  Go to www.cbsd.org, click on E-Notes II, scroll down to Tamanend and click on a teacher or team name to find your assignment.  All work missed by a student must be made up.  Upon return to school, it is the responsibility of the student to contact teachers to make arrangements to make up missed work.

If it appears that your child will be absent for more than 3 days, and you are unable to get up to date assignments from our website, please call the office to arrange for homework.  Homework may be picked up after 3:00 pm.  A follow up call to the office is advised to be sure there is work to be picked up.

DAILY SCHEDULE:

A normal day is divided into 7 class periods, lunch and resource.  Class periods are 47 minutes long; lunch and resource are 30 minutes each. Resource is a time for clubs, tutoring and remediation, ensemble rehearsals, and sustained silent reading.

            7:27 a.m.                              Warning Bell

7:30 a.m.                              Homeroom and Morning Announcements begin

            2:30 p.m.                             Dismissal to Buses

On Early Dismissal days, the Tamanend Middle School day begins as usual at 7:30 a.m. but dismissal for all students is 10:45.

SCHOOL CLOSING/DELAYS:

There are several ways to find out if school is closed, or delayed due to snow or icy roads: call Central Bucks NEWSLINE 267-893-2000 Press #6 (the district’s 24-hour telephone announcement service); listen to radio stations WLEV (100.7 FM) OR KYW (1060 AM).  CENTRAL BUCKS’ SCHOOL CLOSING NUMBER IS 755.  School closings are also announced on TV channels 3, 6, 10, 15(Comcast Cable channel) and 69. If you have Internet access you can find school closing information on www.cbsd.org and click on CB Inclement weather info. Please do not call Tamanend Middle School.

Occasionally, bad weather occurs after school starts, and schools may close early.  Please be alert to this possibility and make plans ahead of time so your children know what to do if this happens.  Tamanend organizes a phone chain to alert parents when schools close early.  All parents should complete and return the bottom half of the early dismissal letter even if they do not wish to receive a call.

If schools are closed because of inclement weather, all community activities scheduled in school buildings in the evenings, including sports, community school and college classes are also canceled.

ATHLETICS

A variety of interscholastic sports are offered at Tamanend.  Fall sports include cheerleading, field hockey, football, soccer, and girl’s tennis.  Winter sports are cheerleading, girls and boys basketball, and wrestling.  Spring sports consist of baseball, softball, boys/girls track, 7th and 8th grade girls’ soccer and 7th and 8th grade girls’ lacrosse.

SPORTS PHYSICALS:

Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) regulations require a physical examination each year and parental consent before a student can train or practice for a sport.  Sport Physical Forms are available in the office or you may print out a Sports Physical Form from our website at www.cbsd.org. Click on Schools, at top, then Tamanend, the Sport Physicals are listed in the table of contents on the left side of the screen.

If a student participates in several sports during the same school year, it is not necessary to get another complete physical.  Your doctor can recertify the student after an examination and review of the student’s health history checklist prior to the start of the new sports season.  Please see the next page for recertification dates.

Recertification forms are available in the school office or use directions above to Sports Physical Form and printout Page 4 for Recertification form.

INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS:

Varsity and junior varsity teams compete with other schools in the Lower Bucks League.

Participation in middle school interscholastic sports allows students to develop skills, and learn what it means to be a member of a team.

Students must meet academic eligibility requirements, which are evaluated every two weeks by teachers.  The standards are the following:

·        One or more F’s or two D’s, as a cumulative average will require placement on an academic probation list for 2 weeks.  Students should use this time to improve their academic standing or risk ineligibility.  The student may continue to practice and play during this time.

·        If, after 2 weeks on academic probation, the student still has one F or two D’s, he or she will become ineligible to practice or compete until their grades return to an acceptable level.

·        Violation of the accepted standards of good citizenship will result in ineligibility for a two-week period.  All such cases are reviewed on an individual basis.
