March 2012

Third grade is currently working on a textile unit. They are creating yarn weavings demonstrating interlock and rya weaving. Students are enjoying seeing the weft strands create beautiful designs.

Students are also learning about proportion and drawing portraits. This unit is a collaboration between the art and the classroom wax museum. Students are drawing a portrait of the person in their wax museum.  

October 2011

Third grade completed their sunset silhouettes. Look for these beautiful multi-media landscapes. Students enjoyed drawing their trees using observation drawing.

Our present unit is creating a  Ceramic Ghost light vessel inspired by Edvard Munch.

November  2010

Third grade is learning about visual and tactile texture.  Students experienced "painting with salt" to create their waves of color paintings.Students learned how artists often create visual textures ( textures you can see)   as well as tactile textures ( you can feel) in their artwork. Students experienced "painting with salt" to create their waves of color paintings. Paintings will adorn the halls soon.

December 2010

Third grade is is "responding to music" through the art element of line. Students apply their knowledge of tempo (from music) to draw at the speed of  classical music clips played at intervals. They also coordinate the "pitch" to create lines that go up and down creating movement in their paintings. Students learn that there are a plethora of line types to evoke emotion in an artwork.

January\February  2011

Third Grade is currently working on their bottle Still Life Paintings. Students are focusing on drawing from observation, symmetry,  and turning a two dimensional shape into a three dimensional form.  In addition students are learning the technique of "dry-brushing". Be sure to check out the new diplays in the hallways.

 March/April ~ 2011

Third grade is working on their ceramic soaring eagles. Look for these eagles flying home shortly! What school spirit.

Our next unit will focus on Egypt in art. Students will be designing a sarcophagus on gold or silver foil! Students will be learning how to write their name in hieroglyphics and create  a clay cartouche! (Egyptian name plate).

 May/June

Third grade students are completing their Egyptian Cartouche. Please look for these to arrive at home in the next two weeks.

Butterfly drawing and designs are our next focus.
