         Wellness Guidelines
Associated With PTO-Sponsored Activities

Purpose:

To establish guidelines for PTO activities to ensure alignment with the CBSD Wellness Policy #246 (http://www.psba.org/Districts_Policies/C/102/POLCBUC246.pdf) and the Nutritional Standards for Competitive Foods in Pennsylvania

Competitive Food is defined as food offered at the school which is outside of the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs.

Scope:
These guidelines pertain to all PTO-sponsored activities which take place during school hours (e.g., classroom parties).  These guidelines do not apply to activities outside of school hours (e.g., Fall Fest, Family Fun Bingo Night).

Guidelines:
  • Food should not be used as a reward for PTO fundraising efforts.  Instead a party focused on a fun classroom activity would be more appropriate.  For example, the classroom with the most Box Tops could be offered a craft party or game party rather than a pizza party.
  • Food may be served at an activity-based party, assuming it follows the following guidelines:
                 1.  Party offers a minimal amount of foods (maximum 1-2 items) that contain added sugar as the first
                     ingredient.
                 2.  The following foods are offered:
                        a.  Fresh fruit and/or vegetables
                        b.  Water, 100% fruit juice or milk
                 3.  Parties do not have food with minimal nutritional value (e.g., soda, water ice, chewing gum, candy)
  • All food items sold as fundraisers or in association with fundraisers on school property during  school hours must meet the guidelines below:
                 1.  Items are less than 250 calories per serving
                 2.  Total fat will be < 35% by weight
                 3.  Saturated fat < 10% of total calories
                 4.  Sugar content will be < 35% by weight (excluding naturally occurring sugars and low fat yogurt)
                 5.  Minimal to no trans fatty acids
                 6.  Food items will be available no earlier than 30 minutes after the last meal period of the day (e.g., bake
sales at lunch time are not appropriate)
  •  The PTO will no longer sponsor bake sales during school hours.
