Grave Markers

Pennsylvania has some very old graveyards. Visiting a graveyard is one way to learn about people from the past. Some graves have special markers on them.

Military Markers

Special markers are placed next to the graves of people who have served in the armed services. These markers hold an American flag which flies over the grave. This is what some of the markers look like:

Revolutionary War
1775-1783

American Civil War
1861-1865

The initials GAR stand for Grand Army of the Republic

 

World War I
[American involvement was from 1917-1918]

 

World War II
1939-1945

This soldier was only 15 when he died.

 

Korean War
1950-1953

 

Vietnam War
1957-1975

 

Markers for Members of Community Organizations

A member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This group supports both active service soldiers and veterans.

This woman was a member of the Daugters of the American Revolution.

A woman who was a member of the Moose Lodge.

A member of the Junior Order, United American Mechanics.

Fire Companies

Each local fire company may have its own marker to single out the
brave people who volunteer to fight fires.
