Early Life
Perry Como was born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He was born on May 18,
1912. His family came from Italy.
Perry started working as a barber when
he was in high school. He soon owned his own shop. He sang for his customers
while he cut their hair. They liked his singing.
Life as a Singer
In 1933 Perry went to work as a singer. He sang with
Freddie Carleone’s Dance Band. He worked with them for 5
years. After that he sang with Ted Weems and his band.
In 1943 Perry Como made his first record. He sang on a
program on the radio. The program was
called “The Chesterfield Supper Club.” It was on every night.
Perry started working in television in
1948. His shows were called “The Chesterfield Supper Club,”
“The Perry Como Show,” and “The Kraft Music Hall.” People liked his
pleasant manner. He made many songs popular. He sang “Catch a Falling
Star” and “Dream Along With Me.” He left weekly television in 1963.
Perry made a Christmas show for many years. His first
one was in 1948. After that he made one every year. He made his last
Christmas show in 1987.
Later Life
Perry Como sold over 100 million records. He won many awards. He helped with charity projects.
Perry Como died on May 12, 2001.
