We are going to begin the year by discussing how to make appropriate book
choices. We will learn about the many book genres available and how we can pick
a book that is "just right " for us. We will be learning the Five Finger rule:

  •      Hold up your fist.

  •      As you try to read the book, put up a finger for each word that you don't know.

  •      If you get to five fingers before the end of the page, the book is probably too difficult for you.
         Try a different book.

You will be encouraged to read a variety of genres this year- both fiction and nonfiction. If you are looking for a good book to read, ask for a recommendation from the librarian, Mrs. Cirulli, a friend, or try one of these websites:

  •      Newbery Medal Award Winners
  •      Young Reader's Choice Awards
  •      Reading Olympics List 2007-2008
