After you write your paper, you must include a Works
Cited page that lists reference materials and sources used. List
only the ones actually mentioned in your paper.
Some teachers will permit you to use the more
common term Bibliography, although technically that means a list of ALL
works consulted during your research. If you have carefully developed
your early working bibliography cards, the preparation of a final list
is just a matter of transfer of information.
Start the list of Works Cited on a new page.
Number each page of the list, continuing the page numbers of the text.
For example, if the text of the paper ends on page 10, the list of works
cited will begin on page 11.
Type the title Works Cited centered,
one inch from the top of the page. Double space between the title
and the first entry. Begin each entry flush with the left margin.
If an entry is more than one line, indent the following line(s) five spaces
from the left margin. Double space the entire list, between entries
as well as within entries. Continue the list on as many pages as
necessary. Number each page.
Arrange items in alphabetical order by the
last name of the author. When no author is listed, alphabetize by the first
word in the title (other than "A", "An", or "The"). When two works
by the same author are used, give the name in the first entry only.
Thereafter, in place of the name, type three hyphens, followed by a period
and the title. The three hyphens stand for exactly the same name
as in the preceding entry.
The general information to be included for
books and periodicals is listed below. See the list that follows
for specific examples of the most commonly encountered forms.
A. Books. The name of the author, the title
of the book, the city of publication, the publisher, and the date must
be
included. Other information is
sometimes included if available: chapter or part of book, editor or translator,
edition, number of volumes, name
of the series, volume number of the book.
B. Periodicals. The name of the author, the
title of the article, the name of the periodical, the volume, issue, and
page numbers.
