learningscience.org Meetings - The meetings will be to continue the development of our web site that connects the national science standards with new and emerging "learning tools". These meetings will count for Act 48 credit. Two afternoon meetings and one summer workshop day is all you need to commit.

Science Coordinators Meeting, January 4th, 2007 - Meeting Notes

• Coordinators reviewed the new Program of Studies book for science changes:
  • New Physics offerings: Academic Physics (algebra based) and Honors Physics
  • Chemistry in the Community name is changed to Conceptual Chemistry
  • Honors courses in the middle school have been changed to "Advanced Science" so that there is no confusion between the weighted high school honors classes and the non-weighted middle school science classes.
• The latest details on the mandatory field test for science, the PSSA Science (see below):

  • The following information applies to the Science field test and is provided to make sure everyone has a clear and consistent understanding:

    • The purpose of the Science field test is to gather information about how well the items perform in testing students’ understanding of the concepts being measured.
    • The Science field test is mandatory for all students in Grades 4, 8, and 11.
    • The testing window for the Science field test is April 23-May 4, 2007.
    • The Science field test in Grades 4 and 8 will take approximately 1 hour.
    • The Science field test in Grade 11 will take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
    • There are 12 different forms of the Science field test in each of the grades.
    • Each form has different items.
    • Each student will take one form of the Science field test.
    • There will be no reporting of results to individuals, schools, or districts because:
      • The purpose of the Science field test is to gather information about the items and not overall student achievement.
      • There are no common items to which all students respond.
      • Each form of the test is not constructed to measure the Assessment Anchor Content Standards in the same manner.
• Advanced Placement courses:
  • There is an ongoing discussion about the length of AP Chemistry and AP Biology. (18, 27, or 36 weeks)
  • GM will schedule a meeting of all AP science teachers to coordinate the AP audit in science.
• Thanks and review of survey about projection station uses.
• Lengthy discussion on the role and expectations of the co-teachers in science class. GM has followed up for more information from the Special Education department.
• Discussion about scheduled science department construction at CB West and the upcoming renovations of CB East.
• Discussion about recent new hires and the progress.
• Distribution of "Den of Inquiry" book for physics teachers to use as resource for algebra based Academic Physics.
• GM will maintain a medaka tank and Rob Zimmerman a zebra fish tank for eggs. We will still order FIRST from Carolina, but these will be our back up, just in case there is a problem with Carolina Biological production.
