High School Life Science Courses
Academic Biology
(18 weeks, 1 credit)
Academic Biology is a course designed
to increase the student's knowledge of concepts, processes, and facts of
biology and to help the student understand that biology is a human endeavor
with social consequences and responsibilities. Major topics covered in
this course are cell physiology, genetics, cell energy, embryology, microbiology,
and bioengineering. This course is intended for students wishing to meet
college entrance requirements. Variation in the course of study are made
for each level.
Advanced Placement Biology
WG, PQ (27 weeks, 1.5 credits)
The Advanced Placement Biology course
is similar to a freshman-level college biology course. It follows a course
outline developed by the Advanced Placement organization and uses a college-level
textbook. College credit may be obtained from many institutions by passing
the Advanced Placement Test. Students who take this course should plan
to take the Advanced Placement Biology Test given in May.
Prerequisite: Academic Biology,
Academic Chemistry, and teacher approval. Application is required.
Advanced Placement Biology Career Academy:
Introduction to Health Care Practices
PQ (9 weeks, .5 credit)
This course will provide students
contemplating careers in biomedical professions firsthand experience with
health care practices. Classes will be conducted on site at Doylestown
Hospital during first block of the last marking period. Students must have
completed AP biology. Students will be evaluated on a portfolio and a final
project/presentation.
Prerequisite: AP Biology and
teacher recommendation. Students must successfully complete an application
and go through the interview process. Blood test for tuberculosis is required
by Doylestown Hospital.
Practical Biology
(18 weeks, 1 credit)
Practical Biology is a problem-based
approach to the biological sciences. In the first half of the course, topics
such as cell function, genetics, and microbiology are covered. The second
half of the course addresses questions and concerns about natural resources,
ecosystems, conservation, and ecology. This course is designed for the
student who would like a more general understanding of the biological world.
Human Anatomy and Physiology
PQ (18 weeks, 1 credit)
The course of study focuses on body
systems such as the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, digestive, and
nervous system. A major theme of this course is to examine current issues,
technologies, and bioethical questions relating to the curricular topics.
Structured lab work, including dissection of specimens, is part of the
course. Human Anatomy and Physiology is designed for college-bound students
with an interest in the allied health fields, or students with a general
interest in the biology of the human body.
Prerequisite: C Grade in Biology
Applied Human Anatomy and Physiology
CB West Only, PQ (18 weeks, 1 credit)
This course links biology and physical
education to provide students with the opportunity to learn about human
anatomy and physiology. The concepts and principles are then applied in
a student-designed total "wellness" program. A wellness program includes
fitness training, nutrition, and stress management. The class meets every
day for one block. Activities include the use of the YMCA as a fitness
center, cholesterol screening, student-designed fitness programs, and exhibition
of mastery, and dissection labs involving preserved specimens. Active participation
is required for all activities.
Prerequisite: Biology with
a minimum grade of C
Applied Human Anatomy and Physiology:
Career Extension
CB East Only, PQ (18 weeks, 1 credit)
This course of study focuses on body systems, such as the
skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, digestive, and nervous systems. This course
includes a Doylestown Hospital component which allow students to explore a wide
range of vocations in the health care field. A major theme of this course is to
examine current issues, technologies, and bioethical questions relating to
curricular topics. Structure lab work, including dissections of specimens, is
part of the course. Anatomy and Physiology is designed for college bound
students with an interest in the allied health fields. Enrollment is limited.
Prerequisite: Academic Biology with a minimum grade of B
and teacher recommendation. An application and tuberculosis test is also
required.
