  The elementary health program is designed to provide the students with basic life skill concepts in mental health, personal hygiene, environmental health, safety, nutrition, substance dependency, and human growth and development.

  Kindergarten

§         Recognize the importance of family members.

§         Recognize the importance of body/teeth care.

§         Understand the importance of proper foods for growth and energy.

§         Learn safety rules for to and from school.

§         Learn the importance of cleanliness.

§         Recognize the possible dangers posed by strangers.

 

  Grade 1

§         Develop increased family awareness.

§         Learn to recognize and name parts of the body and how to keep it healthy.

§         Identify basic food groups.

§         Learn safety rules for to and from school.

§         Develop understandings about medicines, poisons, and drugs and their safe use.

 

  Grade 2

§         Learn to appreciate and develop relationships with family and friends.

§         Increase self-esteem.

§         Develop good sportsmanship.

§         Discuss study rules dealing with emergencies such as “dangerous strangers” and child abuse.

§         Discuss definition of drugs, their use and abuse and ways to prevent accidental poisoning caused by ingesting household substances.

 

  Grade 3

§         Increase self-esteem.

§         Discuss the difference between safe use and abuse of drugs.

§         Discuss diseases.

 

  Grade 4

§         Discuss emotions and how to understand and control them.

§         Explain the influence of peer pressure and behavior.

§         Identify body systems and their functions.

§         Discuss foods and nutrition.

§         Discuss prevention of accidents.

§         Identify diseases and their spread including AIDS.

§         Discuss health effects of alcohol and tobacco.

 

  Grade 5

§         Discuss basic human needs.

§         Relate eating habits to growth and development.

§         Recognize emotional and physical changes as related to human growth and development.

§         Learn the differences between communicable and non-communicable diseases, including AIDS.

§         Discuss decisions and consequences relating to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

 

  Grade 6

§         Understand feelings and basic human needs.

§         Discuss the circulatory, respiratory, nervous, and reproductive systems and explain basic structures and functions.

§         Discuss proper eating habits and effect on the body.

§         Discuss emotional and physical differences on human growth and development.

§         Develop positive self-esteem.

§         Discuss how behavior affects others.

§         Describe effects of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco on the body’s organs, including decisions and consequences.
