  Reading

§         Continue to develop phonemic awareness of sounds.

§         Expand phonics knowledge of letter/sound relationships to include vowels and blends.

§         Use multiple strategies to problem-solve unknown words.

§         Build sight vocabulary of common, high frequency words.

§         Read orally with increased fluency and expression.

§         Self-monitor understanding and explain strategies used to make meaning.

§         Continue to develop comprehension skills to understand and respond to literature.

§         Begin to read independently for enjoyment. 

 

  Language Arts

§         Participate in daily writing activities for enjoyment, in response to experiences and literature, and as creative expression.

§         Be introduced to the steps of the writing process: pre-writing, detailing, responding, revising, editing and publishing.

§         Print correct letter and number forms.

§         Develop the readiness for spelling, including letter sound correspondence and use of phonetic spelling.

  Mathematics

§         Count by 2s to 50 and 5s to 100.

§         Read and write 2-digit numbers.

§         Order and compare numbers to 100.

§         Understand place value for tens and ones.

§         Find sums and missing addends.

§         Know addition and subtraction facts to 18.

§         Add/subtract using a number grid.

§         Understand meaning of addition and subtraction.

§         Use symbols +, -, =.

§         Write and solve addition and subtraction number stories.

§         Find equivalent names for numbers.

§         Sort and identify objects by attributes.

§         Calculate the values of combinations of pennies, nickels, and dimes.

§         Show money amounts with coins.

§         Tell time on the hour, and ½ hour.

§         Measure to the nearest inch.

§         Apply and explain problem solving strategies.

§         Exchange pennies for nickels.

§         Find patterns in +/- facts.

 

  Science

§         Describe various animal habitats.

§         Observe an earthworm to note growth and change.

§         Compare living and non-living things.

§         Investigate survival needs of living things.

§         Explore the properties of color, shape, size, and texture.

§         Classify objects according to their properties.

§         Recognize that all matter exists as solid, liquid, or gas.

§         Describe the characteristics of magnets.

§         Explore the kinds of objects that are attracted by magnets.

§         Understand that magnetic force can pass through certain materials.

 

  Social Studies

§         Recognize similarities and differences among cultures.

§         Compare and contrast life in the U.S. with that in China and Mexico.

§         Discuss the need for rules and laws.

§         Explain the differences between wants and needs.

§         Recognize that individuals perform tasks to earn money to purchase goods and services.

§         Explain how globes and maps represent the earth.

§         Use a key and symbols on a simple map.

§         Describe the accomplishments of some famous Americans.

§         Develop an awareness of events happening in the world today.

§         Use social skills in cooperating with others.

 

  Health

§         Develop increased family awareness.

§         Learn to recognize and name parts of the body and how to keep it healthy.

§         Identify basic food groups.

§         Learn safety rules for to and from school.

§         Develop understandings about medicines, poisons, and drugs and their safe use.

 

  Phys Ed

The Physically Educated Person:

§         Has learned skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities.

§         Values physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle.

 

  Library

§         Locate library collections. Select appropriate materials.

§         Recognize and follow circulation procedures.

§         Recognize the electronic catalog.

§         Produce an answer to a basic research question.

§         Enjoy fiction and non-fiction by a variety of authors and illustrators, drawn from various cultures and experiences.

§         Demonstrate good care of materials, and proper electronic etiquette.

 

  Art

§         Identify various expressive qualities of line.

§         Listen carefully to what others say about art.

§         Construct in paper using additive modeling techniques.

§         Use drawing and painting techniques to depict ideas, feelings, and moods through the use of line and color.

§         Explore the use of symbols and signs to communicate feelings using mixed media.

§         Identify portraits as realistic, idealized, or narrative.

§         Differentiate between American and Oriental landscape images.

§         Discriminate between realism and abstraction using artworks of similar subject matter.

 

  Music

§         Encourage enjoyment and love of music through singing and playing instruments.

§         Perform steady beat and simple rhythms consisting of quarter notes, eighth notes and quarter rests.

§         Recognize repetition and contrast in music.

§         Experience musical concepts by playing instruments and song games.

§         Perform a repertoire of American Folk songs.

§         Perform simple ostinatos.
