February, 2008
Dear Parents,
Our students continue to perform very well on both the PSSA and the SAT. The PSSA tests are used by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to measure student achievement in schools throughout the state. PSSA test results are summarized and reported to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The attached NCLB Report Card summarizes the proficiency levels of our students in reading and mathematics.
While these tests are important indicators of student performance, they do not tell the whole story about CB West. Test scores are only one indication of how our students are doing, and yet there are so many other factors that show our students to be successful. Looking over the past school year, I see there are a few “Points of Pride” that I feel that are just as important as are scores on the PSSA:
- Class of 2007 does extremely well on PSSA. Of the 664 high schools that had juniors take the PSSA, the Class of 2007 scores placed them 26th of all high schools in Pennsylvania. 98% of the class tested Proficient or above on the Writing part of the PSSA.
- Graduation Project. Students continue to improve their products and presentations of the Graduation Project. Thus far this year the Class of 2007 has had 39 students score All-Distinguished. Last year the Class of 2006 had 44 All-Distinguished recipients.
- Renovations at CB West. Renovations on the Art rooms have been completed. Students are now taking Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, and Digital Imaging classes in rooms that are more spacious and better equipped. Presently workers are renovating some of the Science rooms and classrooms in the 20’s hallway. These rooms should be ready in the fall of 2007.
- National Merit Scholars. National Merit scholars are the top ½ of the top 1 percent of all students who take the PSAT in any given school year. This year CB West has 2 semi-finalists and 8 commended scholars.
- The Student Government of CB West continues to support the “Washington Project.” For the last thirteen years, the student body at West has sponsored a holiday party for the students at Washington Elementary School in North Philadelphia. Refreshments and gifts are provided for the Washington elementary students from the contributions that are collected throughout the month of December. West students also made a large contribution to the school’s music and drama program.
I would like to thank parents for the support you provide to your children as well as for the continued support you provide to our school. Please click the link below to review the PSSA test summaries that make up our school’s NCLB Report Card.
